Hand-me-down Barbour too expensive for school wear? 4th grader

Anonymous
DS received a family hand me down from a relative and it’s a Barbour jacket. DH feels this jacket is too costly to wear to school.

Would you allow your kid to wear it to school?
Anonymous
No. My DS lost several jackets in elementary school by leaving them on the playground at recess. Some turned up in lost and found, others did not.

Wear it or save it until he outgrows it (i.e., never wear it)

How does a 4th grader even know what Barbour is? Its used. No one is going to steal it. If he loses stuff and you will be upset, don’t let him take it. My 4th grader wouldn’t even wear a coat unless he was sledding.

It’s fine. But if you will be upset if it gets lost, send a different coat.

If it fits, of course he can wear it. Otherwise you'll be kicking yourself for not making good use of a quality item before he outgrows it.

Same goes for everything you value that you're afraid of using, like your fancy china. Use it! Life is short.

I’ve never heard of Barbour so chances are most 4th graders haven’t either unless you’re at some super expensive bougie school.
Let him wear it if he likes it.

+1

I assume OP is referring to it getting lost. This would not be a covetable item for kids.

This. Totally fine to wear unless you or the giver will be upset if it gets lost. It’s not a common kid brand/style here, so unlikely to be confused for someone else’s coat – which was always the most likely mixup at our house.

How will you feel if he loses it? If that will bother you, then no. If you can shrug it off, then fine.

I have had mine for 30 years and never bought for children until they were grown. Now I search out originals on poshmark etc because they are china made these days.

Kind of a weird impractical choice for a 4 th grader.

If you OR the giver would be upset if it was lost, then I wouldn't.

Otherwise isn't half the point that they're supposed to be sturdy jackets?
Anonymous
I'd allow it, but my 4th grader wouldn't want to.

I think that brand was sold and re-marketed as something more posh but they used to be just practical coats for hunting and riding even after goretex and such became available because they breathed pretty well and held up to dirt, and you could rewax them. But only wear mine now as a light jacket and if it’s really raining I wear a synthetic raincoat. They’ve gotten better.

All this to say I don’t see why a fourth grader couldn’t wear it but they’d probably be happier playing in a synthetic raincoat.
