APS Vaping and shagging in bathroom

Anonymous
On the phone thread PP said that kids were banned from bathroom because of vaping and hooking up in the bathrooms?

We are in 5th grade, so obv none of that is happening at our school

Is this really an issue at MS and HS at APS??

The vaping is a nationwide problem. Some places have it worse than others but you would be hard pressed to find a school (public or private) that doesn’t have some type of substance problems. Even in rural areas ZYN (synthetic dip tobacco) is becoming popular. The tobacco companies really came back with a bang.

Yes, it’s a problem across the country. APS isn’t immune to it.

+1

And smoking/hooking up in HS bathrooms is also nothing new.

Smoke detectors had largely ended smoking, and hallways cameras at bathroom entrances curtailed most hookups since a the “wrong” gender entering the opposite gender bathroom was recorded

People smoked in bathrooms when I was in HS in the 90s. This is not new. I have not heard of bathroom hookups, but stuff definitely happened back then, so I assume it would now. It's not an APS thing. It's a HS thing.

Of course it it...No holds barred!

You need to keep pushing for vape detectors. MCPS in Montgomery County, MD, is going to equip all its secondary bathrooms with those in the near future.

As for shagging (hadn't heard that term in a while, thanks, OP!)... it's much less common than vaping, but yes, it does occasionally happen. And sadly sometimes it's not consensual and leads to sexual assault allegations. See if you can pull the crime log for your school system. I can do that for MCPS.

You think rich kids don’t vape or hookup?

Bwhahahahahaha.

Is it really so hard to have a staffer patrol these bathrooms so kids can void in peace? I feel like my broke overcrowded urban high school figured this out 30 years ago, and here we are in rich Arlington and can’t figure it out.

Bus drivers, extended day attendants, cafeteria ladies, and subs are all relatively cheap and in need of more hours. Put them to work. Rolling patrols, different times every day, massive consequences for misbehavior. Boom, problem solved.

Nope. Because kids will now accuse them of assault or similar and the kids will win. No adult wants to be alone with a kid ever.

Yes- when my daughter was an eighth grader at Williamsburg, there was a group of seventh grade girls they were constantly vaping in the bathroom.

I have been a substitute and no way would I take in assignment monitoring the bathroom. Middle school and high school kids are just as big as me and you want me to confront them on bathroom behaviors?
