Found out end of July we would be moving to DC or Bethesda area. My 10 yo loves being a part of swim team and I'd love for him to join a team for the winter to help him make some new friends as well as keep up with something he loves. I looked at the teams listed on here and it looks like we will have missed tryouts since we just moved to our new house this week! Do any have waitlists in case kids drop out? Any still offering tryouts? Suggestions? |
Tryouts are done, but I’m sure you will be able to find space somewhere. Below is a link to a list of all the clubs that are part of PVS. Your best bet is to identify the clubs that practice near your home (TOLL and NCAP Gtown Prep practice at Gtown Prep, ASA practices at Stone Ridge, and SDS practices at Holton Arms, all of which would be relatively convenient to Bethesda). Practices start up again for most clubs either the day after Labor Day or the following Monday, so I would look into some of these clubs and start calling the ones you are interested in to see if they have space. Good luck!

Is he already part of a USA or YMCA swim team and participated in meets for club swimming? I’d assume Fish, Tollefson, and All Star Aquatics will have space but best to reach out directly at this point. |
Does his current coach know any of the coaches of teams that are geographically convenient for you? |
It probably is too late if he's never done club swimming before. If he's done club swimming, even the "full" clubs (which includes Toll, NCAP and ASA) will find room if he is a good swimmer. Email them and ask! |
What are his times? The faster he is, the more options he'll have. If his times are just average, it's probably too late for the closest options mentioned above. If you are willing to drive further, try: https://www.machineaquatics.com/ https://www.gomotionapp.com/team/pvtibu/page/home Good luck and keep us posted! |
Fish wouldn't be convenient to Bethesda or DC. Too much traffic IMO. If in DC, SDS and Tollefson also have some DC practice locations. NCAP at American University might make sense depending on your DC location. Same would be true for Machine at UMD. Agree with poster about TIBU if you are in Bethesda and willing to drive. |
It really depends on where you will live and what age/level your kid is. You will most likely find a club with space. It just won’t be one of the less expensive clubs. |
You should start thinking about finding a summer pool too. If you are in Bethesda, look at Old Georgetown Club, Wildwood Manor and Seven Locks if you are near Walter Johnson HS. If you are more towards Whitman High look at Merrimack Park, Bannockburn, Mohican. I’d advise against Bethesda Pool, Potomac Swim and Tennis, and Tilden Wood. |

Why? |
<waiting for a post recommending a different Mcsl team than those just mentioned> |
Thanks everyone. My son swam for our club and the coaches do not know any here. I was hoping they did! He was a decent swimmer but not setting records fast. I think his 50 free was 41.23 seconds. I called Tollefson and All Star Aquatics and both didn't even ask questions but just said they're full. What about the dolphins? One of the teams I called mentioned them. I looked up dolphins and a few teams come up. Anyone have info on that team? |
That club was Joe Flaherty’s Dolphins and probably would have been a great fit, but I don’t think they have a competitive age group program this year. There was a shake-up with the club and many of the coaches went to a new club called Quince Orchard Swim Academy which is in Gaithersburg. Try to reach out to Sea Devils, it’s a more low key club that I can’t imagine being full to the point that they would reject a kid with club experience. |
Tiburones has teams that are less strict. Join this year and switch next year if you want to try out for RMSC |
Look at NCAP Holton/AU. Still pretty close to Bethesda |
