https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/08/19/dc-ouc-outage-investigation/ "The police investigation, first reported by NBC Washington, will look into whether a botched software update that caused the computer outage was criminally negligent, City Administrator Kevin Donahue told reporters Monday. Officials confirmed the investigation in a press briefing Monday where they detailed a 22-step plan to address technology problems that have plagued the cityβs 911 center, which has experienced eight significant technology disruptions this year." "A baby in cardiac arrest died during the outage after some of the units tapped to respond were mistakenly dispatched to two scenes at once, sparking public attention on the technology failure and its potential cause." |
| I understand they offered bonuses to people to come to work. |

An extra $800 per month just to show up and paid for with your taxes. π

Do you not want them to fix staffing? |
| This is a cluster f*** and while there are shortages everywhere, this indicates extraordinarily poor leadership and management, and you won't fix this problem until you fix management. Cash alone isn't sufficient |
The traditional way to fix this problem is firing the dead wood and hiring new employees that are dependable. If I don't show up for my job, I get fired. I don't get a bonus. One might call that an adverse motivation. |
| The job is very hard for many reasons. You hear horrific things happening and you don't hear the resolution. |
We should close it then. And any other public safety jobs that don't support mental health. |
| Have you tried calling 911 lately. Good luck getting through. It rings and rings or you get hung up on. |
| This is embarrassing. |
They don't want to hear about your problems. |
| I called them at about 3am on a Sunday morning to report a few weeks back to report a single vehicle crash. I called them a couple of times and no one answered. They called me back a little while later. |
| Sadly this is not new. I grew up in this area and can recall those news stories about DC 911 growing up and how bad it was. |

This is something we can probably outsource to the Philippines and get much better results at a fraction of the price. High quality English spoken, they need to study Google Maps and Street View to familiarize themselves with the District. We are actually quite a small urban jurisdiction for 911 to handle with a pretty simple city layout.
The hardest part is dealing with overlapping jurisidictions - MoCo, PG, and Arlington County, federal agencies with jursidiction over different roads (eg. Rock Creek Parkway). The real issue is that DC 911 center is a jobs program for otherwise unemployable local people with low levels of education. These are not the people you want working a 911 call center. |
