I live in Takoma Park. I’m voting for Trump!

Would it be unadvisable for me to put out a Trump yard sign? What do you think would happen?

Nobody knows that I’m voting for Trump. I’m a legal immigrant and registered independent. I want to exercise my right to free speech, and it would say a lot positively about America to be unafraid to dissent from the opinion of 90% around me. But do you think I would risk vandalism or social harm to my family?

Social harm, maybe? People will judge other people based on what they believe, but I see Trump bumper stickers in Takoma Park and the cars they're on aren't attacked or anything.

Social harm, probably. I could also see someone doing something passive aggressive like putting one of those dumb “in this house we believe…” signs next to it. But I doubt anyone will vandalize.

You’ll be ostracized.

We have free speech here in America. Do it. Don't care about what other people think be yourself.

Hate has no home here. Except for Trump supporters.

Ha! I was surprised to see "women for Trump" in my NOVA ultra liberal neighborhood, mostly it is military renters. I dont judge, though I know the neighborhood does.

It's fine to put a sign up op I don't anyone is going to try and hurt you or your family
I'm seeing a lot more Trump signs in my area fyi so I think it's totally fine. No worries.

Feel free to do what you want. But understand that Trump marginializes people of color, people who are gay, people who are trans etc. There are a lot of those people who live in your neighborhood, so don't be surprised when people assume that you support those positions (as you seem to proudly do.) and treat you accordingly.

What are you asking DCUM for? Only you can decide whether you're "unafraid to dissent."

I think it's unlikely that anyone will vandalize your yard sign. However, it's quite likely that people will have opinions about you, based on your yard sign. Most of these opinions will not be positive opinions. Some people may also tell you their opinions about your yard sign. All of this is also free speech. "Free speech" does not mean "I get to say what I want, and you don't get to criticize me for it."

You should do it as an interesting social experiment. Takoma Park is the land of signs about tolerance (Hate has no home here.). Let’s see if that’s true with your Trump sign! (I don’t think it is- Takoma Park is just as judgemental as anywhere else, just for different things).

I mean, most people wouldn't do anything bad, but they also won't do anything nice for you either.

Do whatever you want. Land of the free and all that. Yes, obviously there will be social consequences - your neighbors will loathe you. I doubt they'll act on it, because they're civilized.
