I planned a special vacation for my family - was so excited for it after a crazy couple of years. It was pretty pricey and required a lot of planning. I’ve had unknown GI symptoms essentially since getting here - think it is reflux - but I also have a lot of health anxiety which is being compounded by not being in the US/close to familiar places.
Part of me wishes I was at home. I am spending this entire vacation worrying about a medical crisis or feeling like crap. Just venting, I guess, but this is so disappointing. |

My kid was sick on a vacation once, fever etc.
I remember laying with her in shade on a beach and thinking about how it sucked, but then thinking about how parents on the other side of the world are pushing their babies off beach’s in rubber boats to escape war, and that put it in some perspective for me. |
Yes-so true. Grateful for the opportunity to take a vacation at all. |
You just had to go there, didn't you? |
| I’m so sorry. I hope you feel better today. |
Seriously. People like this are so annoying. It is normal and reasonable for OP to be upset about sickness ruining a vacation. |
| *shrugs* c'est la vie. |
| Op test for Covid. My DD just had it on vacation- gastro issue only. |

I think anxiety can perpetuate and sometimes worsen GI issues.
Try to do what you can to relax as much as anything. I hope it improves before you leave. |
100% Do you have any medication for your anxiety, OP? If not, in the future I would get some so you can help yourself relax. |
| I’m sorry, OP - I’ve had that happen and it’s no fun. Can you find a local pharmacy for some help with the gastro issues? |
Well why not? finding perspective helps me reframe and not sink into feeling sorry for myself. I was at the beach recently and dealing with teen sassiness. I was feeling bummed about missing the old days when my kids were so happy at the beach. I saw a mom tube feeding her kid who looked like he had severe cerebral palsy—and it gave me perspective because my kids can talk and run and do all the things this kid can’t and…that mom looked happy! I can’t promise she was, but she wasn’t feeling sorry for herself. So Op…I’m truly sorry you’re feeling crummy on your long awaited vacation! I really am. We don’t have a ton of money to travel, so it’s a big deal to me. I would be bummed too. But I think we can ALSO be grateful about other things to keep us from sinking too low, like the pp suggested. I hope you feel better soon! |
| Aw, I'm sorry, OP. We've had various illnesses interrupt vacations and it's truly disappointing. I hope you feel better soon. |
|
Sorry this is happening to the OP and I've been worried about this happening on our upcoming $$$ trip to Europe - my first time going. I think it can happen due to a combination of stress, time change, lack of sleep, and different foods??
|
| So sorry. It’ is incredibly frustrating. It really is probably nothing more than an inconvenience so please don’t stress about it! Do whatever works for you to distract yourself and tamp down the anxiety. And see if you can get Imodium, tums, pepto or whatever you need — even if you have to pay some ridiculous price to get to a pharmacy — paying $100 for a cab or delivery service will be worth it! |
