Round 2 of braces-$7200 complex, is this a reasonable price or high?

Anonymous
My 14 year old Dd now needs complex brace work done for her jaw work and ortho gave us a quote of $7200. Insurance maybe covers $1500 so I would need to cover the rest. It’s extra painful as had round one 3 years ago but since jaw is moving, more work needed again. Is this considered reasonable price? We live in DC. Thx

It would depend on the amount and type of work. Why did you need 2 rounds to begin with? Was that truly necessary?

Yes major jaw work involved with my daughter bottom teeth being over her top teeth so round one of braces reversed that but now jaw moving again as she’s growing again prompting need for round 2!

Very reasonable. We paid $ 10200 for our daughter for Invisalign. It was worth it.

Get a few estimates.

I would get another estimate - and see if driving over the MD line is worth it.

We paid about your quote for round 1. One of the things that made it worth it was that my kids could walk to the orthodontist. Not having to get them to or from appointments for our family was worth the difference in cost.

Do 3-4 consults.

Regular braces are $4-5k in Bethesda, across the board so “jaw stuff” may be more. Our insurance pays half up to $2500/2500.

So everyone prices it to the max.

Yours is extra high. Are they breaking the jaw or doing more than just braces for 1-2 years??

For one round? we had $5k for one round, $4500 or so for the 2nd which is about to start.

That lower jaw will grow until around age 18. I had jaw surgery then - had to wait years - and honestly, they should have waited longer, as my lower jaw is pretty prominent as an adult.

We've paid maybe 9K total for Invisalign for 15-year old, so it doesn't seem too out of line.

NP. We are in phase 2 for crossbite where DS's lower bite was entirely over his upper jaw. Right now his upper jaw is forward but he is only 13 and his lower jaw will continue to grow. It's possible that we will need to look at jaw surgery in the future. Was the surgery covered by insurance?

Why are you all falling for braces at 10-11yrs old?!?

Braves after puberty. One time the right time.

Orthos scamming you

Yes it was (keep in mind I’m almost 50). I’m wondering if boys’ jaws take longer to finalize than girls’.

Many things are best handled during the growing phase.

I think so. We paid a little over 6,000 for one round of traditional metal braces that were on about 13 months. No major issues, just cosmetic to straighten teeth alignment. I didn’t shop around though.
