| Is this a common problem? Eastern middle had to cancel activities. |
| For many of MCPS’s older schools, yes it is common. The school system does a horrible job keeping up with building maintenance. |
| Eastern truly is so old and I think they don’t do all the preventative maintenance they could because the general plan is to rebuild and tear it down. I wish they would just get on with replacing it at this point. |
| Installing new HVACs in old buildings doesn't work very well. Irregular temperatures and problems with condensation. PTSA needs to keep the pressure on; document cancelled activities due to temperature and make sure the PTSA has a lot of people show up at the county council to describe the problems. Be in touch with the education committee on the council ahead of time. |
| Also, document the mold in the building. If it's in Eastern, it's a health threat, particularly with anyone who has a mold allergy. |
| Frost too, ironically. |
| Even newer buildings have HVAC issues that can attributed to the energy saving measures. Then, McPS will turn off the heat or AV from 6pm-6am and wonder why it takes 6 hours to actually change the temp of a building. These huge fluctuations in temp and humidity damage school equipment, especially musical instruments. Then, McPS won’t give schools enough money to fix the things broken due o their negligence! |
Yes - remember when the AC went down in May/June and the admin brought in popsicles for the entire school? |
Just to emphasize, mold is a health threat for absolutely everybody. |
Ooooorrr...(follow me now)...ooooorrrr, MCPS, which has known the relatively poor condition of Eastern for a looooooonnng time, could have prioritized that over St. Pat's it's-their-turn/got-to-spread-capital-spending-around approach that failed to prioritize the facilitiies most in need county-wide. Aaaaannnd...(get this)...aaaaannnd, the County Council could actually fund the full capital need for once in forever (with the need actually underrequested for many years due to MCPS' understanding that the Council wouldn't come close to approaching the real number -- not that they typically hit the lower amount requested). It's like the general approach to infrastructure across the country since the 70s. Just sad. It's beyond me why there's the suggestion of this being on a PTSA, when we know that paradigm rewards the squeaky wheels that tend to be more affluent in the first place. |
Exactly. Why does the PTSA need to in almost every BIG issue????!!!! School safety, cellphone policy, enriched novel studies, HVAc issues!!!! Why o why? |
Yes, I worked in a new mcps school building (built in last 10 years) & during the hot weeks of May & June, it was so uncomfortable during the school day. It was so humid that paper was damp. By the last hour or so of the day, things would finally feel on the more comfortable side due to the ac being on for several hours & then it’s time to go home & a/c is again shut off over night. I can’t imagine how bad it must be in the older schools. |
| Can MCPS give schools which are old and do not have proper windows facing outside or unopenable large fans? It wil get cold soon but it is so famn hot in some of those classrooms. |
Talk to your school about the problem. |
Talk to your county council about Eastern. It's time now to get a replacement building. |
