Kids aren’t scared of thunderstorms anymore?

Anonymous
At least mine aren’t nor are their friends/my nephews or nieces.

I remember being terrified of them as a kid. It felt like a very kid thing for generations to be afraid of thunder (think of The Sound of Music).

My friends and I were talking and we have a theory. So many kids these days use sound machines. Our kids loved sleeping to the thunderstorm setting and a few other parents said the same thing. Others used white noise, rain, rain, river, ocean but they’re all fairly loud constant noises
.
Did this cause kids to be desensitized to thunder storms?

Just a funny little thought. Wondering if other parents outside my circle have experienced the same thing.

No, it's because our parents convinced us we'd be killed via landlines, the shower, running to get the mail, etc.

One of mine is scared, still. My younger DC isn’t scared. I remember being scared of them as a kid.

I think my oldest is scared that tornados will spin off the storm and hit our house.

One of my kids is scared of thunderstorm. So is our dog, and they spin each other up.

I don't think this is a generational thing, it's individual. I was never afraid of thunderstorms.

Ditto. Love them. We used to beg our parents to leave the shades open so we could watch the summer storms at bedtime.

DC9 is always very scared of thunder. If it’s cloudy he will ask if it will rain or check weather, if it rains he will worry about thunder, and he cries badly when hears thunder. Same for bees. DD11 never worries about thunder though.

I was never afraid, my 4 year old is.

I don't remember being scared of thunderstorms as a kid. Don't remember my sister being scared either. I'm sure some are, depending on temperament but I don't think this is a generational thing.

Same! I’ve always loved them. So did my parents.

Yup. Information was so limited that every threat was blown up into a BIG THING. Just like I was 100% convinced that I’d regularly encounter quick sand and need a strategy for freeing myself and that there was a good chance I’d be lost in the Bermuda Triangle if I flew to the Caribbean.

I'm in mid-fifties and was never afraid of thunderstorms and, in fact, loved them. What's to be afraid of when you're inside. We knew not to talk on phone or stand next to a window and if outside not to stand under a
tree.

I had a dog when it thundered would go crazy, run around the house and then go to bay window and howl.

Never been scared of them nor do I remember any of my siblings being scared. My own kids are not scared, or at least if they are it hasnt been memorable.

+1

Have always loved summer storms. We were just told not to shower during lightning.

I know more weather-fearful kids today than back then.
