What are the things your views have significantly changed on over time?
I'll start. * Twenty years ago "man always pays" (on a date, on a trip) seemed the only acceptable way. Now, while I'm far from militant about splitting the bill, I do think arguments for splitting, or at least taking turns paying, are actually better most of the time, at least when the people involved have similar income. Of course, it's all theory for me by now, not practice. * In the early 90s I really liked [gangsta] rap. Looking back at the older material, I still enjoy the beats and appreciate the lyrical skills, but have a 'hard disagree' with the mentality and find it's been doing a disservice to the audience. Note: I do fully realize I'm not the audience. Can still have an opinion. |
When I was younger, I hated yogurt and goat cheese. Each time they were offered to me, I passed with extreme prejudice.
But now...I can't imagine a life without either. They're among my top 15 favorite foods. Each morning, I start my day with a yogurt, which I describe as a little cup of happiness. |

I used to be re a real *sshole about proper grammar. I still value it, but I do not judge people for it nearly as much. As long as I understand what you're trying to say, then we're all good. Pointing out other people's grammar mistakes in low stakes communication is just a petty way to undermine them and their ideas. Yes, we shouldn't have spelling errors on a printed handout. No, your comma splice doesn't mean your idea is stupid. |
Abortion, christianity, and organized religion in general. (Female who grew up in highly conservative small town.) |
Abortion/religion. I grew up very catholic.
I also feel like maturity has just changed my opinion about how harshly I used to judge people for all kinds of things. As I get older I see the whole world much more in shades of grey. |
All dogs are nice animals and I want a dog. Too many human idiots changing my mind. |
This. Similarly, clothing. Wear what you want, with the understanding that clothing sends a message, and you should be making choices knowing that. But once you know, it's up to you how to deal with that information. |
Have you changed your mind YAY or NAY to socks with Birks? |
+1 I cringe at some of the things I used to believe because of religion. |
Abortion. I grew up Muslim. Even though abortion is allowed in Islam, I thought of it as a "personal responsibility" thing, but was unbelievably stupid and naive about reality when I was younger when I was "pro-life."
I've never had an abortion, but I've done a 180 and now understand that abortion rights are a significant societal need, for a gazillion reasons. |
College as the only route. A professional degree and career as the acceptable route to happiness and stability. |
Christianity. I went to a strict Sunni Muslim school as a child that was deeply anti Christian. It sounds bizarre but the show The Vikings actually influenced me re Christianity and now think of it as beautiful and don’t have that low grade animosity I used to “unconsciously “ harbor. |
Cops.
As a kid, and even into my early 20s I really bought into the whole “cops are the good guys here to protect us!” thing. Now I know better. |
Christianity. Grew up atheist/agnostic and became Catholic. With that came a chance in almost all my political stances and outlook in general.
I also used to think everyone should have kids, for their own happiness and growth. Now I am not so sure. I think some people truly should not have kids and it is wise for them to realize it before having kids. And that they can be happy without kids. |
