Thank you Rutherford for hosting. Our Team Rep explained what an undertaking it is to host a league meet. To get rained out halfway through and lose concession money is rough. You all did a great job. We asked why the big pools never host but have the majority of the swimmers present and were told that they simply will not pony up. Someone said it could be parking issues in those neighborhoods - but yesterday people were parking a mile away to get to the meet. Why can't NVSL just make them? Well done Rutherford. |
Very well done Rutherford!
Thank you for hosting and the many, many hours of work by your entire pool. Your reps did an outstanding job and everyone was helpful & kind. Signed, a former major NVSL event pool host |
This was already addressed in the other ASR thread but long story short, it's not only parking but also the the availability of space for teams to setup. The D1 pools have big red X's on both of these counts. Great job, Rutherford! |
Looking at Google maps, Tuckahoe, Overlee and Chesterbrook all have parking lots larger than orange Hunt that could be used for team areas. They also all have plenty of side streets which are what is generally used for parking? Looks to me like those red x’s are green check’s. |
THIS. They have the space. They simply do not want to put in the work. |
These are so much densely populated areas than the typical host pools with busier traffic and just more residents affected (who will complain to the county and should complain). Overlee hosted divisional relays and will host divisionals too and it was a total traffic and parking shit show with just that level of event. The backup on Langston boulevard which Overlee hired off duty police to manage traffic was still awful and accidents are common on that stretch of the road. |
Residents complain in host neighborhoods too |
But they are "poorer" so it is okay. |
From talking to more experienced AS/ASR coaches/swimmers/parents yesterday, everyone was talking about how much better it was for the teams to be staged on grass (like yesterday) vs. asphalt. Many of those pools in the denser areas would involve team staging in a parking lot vs. a field - so might be doable, but would be a trade-off on pool/facilities (where no one spends a whole lot of time) vs. the tent areas. |
What went well at Rutherford:
1. The team areas - having the well marked 15 by 15 plots and team assignments was fantastic. 2. The concessions were quick and never had horrendous lines - only Rita's ice did. 3. The pool deck set up was very good, probably could have added more bleachers. 4. Everyone working the meet were amazing. What did not work well, or should have been publicized: 1. The lack of cell service in the whole neighborhood. It was a nightmare to coordinate amongst teams and then when the weather. We were told outside the neighborhood was fine, far from the truth. The lack of cell service was dangerous when the weather came in, communication and messaging was inconsistent. 2. A PA system or something since there was no cell phone service. A way to communicate to teams from the pool what is going on. This also would have helped with the weather call. |
Get a grip. There’s just a lot more people in those areas. Also a lot more residents don’t have garages or even driveways and use street parking themselves. Roads are narrower. It’s not some conspiracy that they are pools in a more densely-populated area. It’s just facts. |
Orange Hunt has a lot of adjacent green space. You all are so desperate to punish these D1 teams that you want your kids to stand on asphalt and park god knows how far away and then walk through busy streets through traffic to get to the pool. Come up with better incentives and appropriate support for host pools that have the right setup and put measures in place to curb the bad behavior of some of the D1 spectator parents. The answer is not to cram the meets into their pools and make everything unpleasant and unsafe. |
Sounds like CoC was really disorganized (in addition to being insanely hot). Which was evidenced by kids being confused about which lanes they swimming in for several heats. Agree with all of the above as well. |
Not sure what you're talking about here. I was in CoC area and it was very well-organized. |
This is BS. I grew up not far from Overlee and swam there as a kid. Traffic is no worse and population no denser than Rutherford and Orange Hunt. And for all those complaining about the parking lot option - it was the set up at Orange Hunt - and yes it was BOILING. No pool is perfect but they make it work. |
