| This deal is not done, so DC has some hope. Lets pressure the Mayor and DC Council to move aggressively and quickly. Both are important. |
|
The ball (and puck) are in Virginia’s hands now. Also, what are the District residents willing to give up to keep the teams, especially with a very bleak economic outlook? Frankly, I feel Leonsis is done with DC and if the VA deal fails to materialize he will start shopping the teams around. Vegas and Seattle would be willing to pay big bucks for an NBA team and I’ve read Atlanta is interested in yes, another NHL franchise. |
Yes and it’s well known that Montreal desperately wants an NBA team, and also its Expos back. It’s not improbable that DC could be left without any pro sports teams at all. |
There's no way the NBA would allow a team in Montreal after what happened in Vancouver. There are already plans to expand in Vegas and Seattle, bringing the league to 32 teams. Now, the Wizards could move to Seattle and the DMV gets a new expansion team (like the Browns/Ravens in the NFL), but I don't see why anyone would want that. |
The Nats are probably fine (although Nashville comes up every so often as a possible relocation site). The Commanders will most likely stay in Maryland or go to Northern Virginia as I don’t think most DC residents want the NFL to play at a potential RFK 2. United and the Spirit definitely will stay; the Mystics (most likely) will stay. NBA-G league team will stay. If the Caps do leave, I’m sure an AHL franchise can be found. |
Or they can sit back and let the Virginia House of Delegates reject a bad deal, and maybe have a staffer take Teddy’s call when he comes crawling back. |
The city has offered $500M with unanimous support of the council. The city doesn't have 70 acres to offer Ted as a counter to Virginia. I am not sure what more you want them to do. |
That is not likley if Alexandria is on board. |
hard to understand how Alexandria would be on board with the potential liability involved, unless the politician have already been paid off. If I were an Alexandria taxpayer, I would be furious over this. |
To start, pass the legislation, and have it signed. Not talk about it. Then, look for other features to retain the teams. Ted wants office space, so DC should find an office building near Capital One Arena. Be creative on practice space. Maybe, add hockey to or nearby the Wizards/Mystics current practice facilities. But be aggressive. |
Alexandria tax payers are fine as northern VA has a great economic outlook. DC residents should worry about their crime wave and loss of business. DC is losing federal agencies, retail, and now pro sports. |
Montreal wants the Expos back? Hardly anybody went to their games before they left! |
There is plenty of commercial real estate available near the arena. That isn't what Ted wants. He wants "a complex" that he owns and controls, that is more than an arena and front offices. he wants what Virginia has promised. the council passing the 500 million dollar bond bill won't sway the deal, because DC cannot offer what Ted wants. The question is, can virginia politics deliver? I don't see where democrats in the assembly are interested in subsidizing billionaires, and there certainly isn't any good will between Youngkin and the Assembly. And...I am not sure Alexandria is going to want to be on the hook for 9 figures of bond liability. |
Alexandria has bigger problems. Like it’s crap schools. Same reason DC shouldn’t cave to Ted. Use the money for more cops. And schools. |
