2033 MCE Midnight v. BLC Orange

Anonymous
These are our options for our 8 year old DD. Are either of these teams worth our time or money? We are feeling discouraged by the lack of options and that it’s mostly due to our lack of lacrosse knowledge. Neither of us played lacrosse growing up (although we were both very successful ball athletes in other sports), so didn’t realize these club teams are more or less set by the time the girls are in 3rd grade. Our DD is very athletic, has good stick skills, stellar defense, and is very fast. The issue seems to be that BLC 33 Blue is already stacked and established and she’s an unknown at this point. I would think BLC orange would be fine, but all I’m reading is that the B teams are just money grabs, so not sure it’s worth it if they aren’t truly interested in developing those players. Such a sad state we’re living in that you have to know and play the politics of these teams before the kids are even 10 years old. Anyway, if someone could advise, please. If we’re better off just doing a rec team, I want to hear that view as well.

IMO neither is a good option.

Where do you live? If you are considering MCE then you are close to Next Level which is turning into MnD DC. Rebels is not to far away. Rebels 2033 has a good and well known coach.

We live in Bethesda. Has Rebels already had a tryout? We miss the NL tryout the other day, but I guess it’s worth reaching out about a supplemental.

There’s a second MnD tryout next week.

If she’s still 8, couldn’t she do 2034? Those teams are just forming.

So I guess we fumbled that. When they originally published their tryout it was the one next week, but we have vacation planned, so decided we would put our eggs in the BLC basket this week. Then of course I come on here today and see NL had a tryout the other day that DD could have attended, but I was unaware of it. Just not tapped in enough. Ugh.

She turns 9 in July, so is a rising 4th grader even though she’s only a couple/few months older than girls playing 2034. Maybe? I don’t know how this works. It seems like it would be cleaner if it was done by age and not grade.

If your DD is good enough to be on one of the 1st teams at these clubs, she’ll get moved up after a season or a year on the B team. Especially at the younger ages, there’s a lot of movement.

BLC Orange teams of 4-5 years ago are not the same as where they are today. It has changed a lot, for the better. They are putting together good teams with paid coaches and seem to really be making sure those teams have the same attention and resources as blue teams. I would go there over MCE without question.

Rebels still have tryout dates on June 24th and July 15th.

Stay far far away from MCE. BLC Orange and NL/M&D are great options.

Hmm, not sure what the rules are for girls. Boys brought in an age rule this past year with a June 1 cut-off, but don't know if that applies to girls as well.

That is not true. Girls on orange rarely develop enough to move up. You have to do a ton of work outside of the club programming to move up.

MnD is best option for you.

Not to mention there are a lot of politics involved in these decisions.
