| I just watched the Copa America Opening Ceremony, and was surprised by the Christian prayer that was shared in both Spanish and English. Is this a tradition? Was this also done in the Euro Cup opening? Just curious. |
|
That’s awesome, OP. Thanks for sharing it! This would
Not be done in Europe and specifically at the Euros. It is done in Latin America where Copa America is traditionally held. God bless the players and especially the ones from Mexico que Dios los bendiga y proteja and if they can’t make it far let Argentina win. In Jesus’ name. |
| I'm going to guess the non-Christian players don't find it awesome. |
You must be fun at parties |
They don’t give a crap. Any soccer player who has played in the Americas know that the athletes are overwhelmingly Christian and catholic! Watch the game for 20 minutes and it will click. And if you don’t like it…. DONT WATCH IT!!! |
People in America don’t realize the rest of the world works very differently. |
I’m the PP you’re responding to. I’m Jewish and grew up in South America hearing from classmates that I killed Christ. People in America don’t realize there are religious minorities in all parts of the world that often feel marginalized (so, actually not as different as you think). |
| Did you? |
The refs often make the sign of the cross at start/end. I'm atheist and unbothered by any of the religious influences or superstitious traditions, it's all part of sport culture and especially soccer. Some of it is hilarious.

America is the rare place where marginalized minorities are recognized and have a voice (at least some of the time). |
|
This is a weird thread.
Might need to be moved. |
| Hubbie is from South America - he was so confused by the prayer, just a US thing I'm guessing. Really out of place, especially given the specific Christian references in it. |
Repent and you can be saved!!!! |
There is still time for you to be saved, brother. |
|
This threads should definetly be moved. Both religion and politics outside of its direct subject will always set up a space for ugly people from both sides to voice their opinions.
This is a soccer forum. If you want to talk talk about prayer or politics whether Christian, Muslim, Liberal or Conservative, there is a place/section for that. Sure, a prayer took place at a major soccer event, but it had nothing to do what looked like biased reffing throughout. That should be the real subject. |
