They see strength’: The Black sports icons shaping Donald Trump’s take on race, politics, and masculinity

So that’s why Black Americans are more supportive of Trump, is basically what it comes down to.

“WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — The road to understanding Donald Trump’s appeal to a segment of Black America — and his hopes of winning back the presidency by pulling a few precious votes away from Democrats — runs through Trump’s Black friends, a loose set of iconic sports figures from the 1980s.

That, at least, was the impression I got from his campaign when I set out to interview Trump about his apparent gains with Black men, a group of voters who some public polls show are more likely to consider backing him this year. Trump’s aides wouldn’t promise a meeting with the former president just yet — instead, they started setting up interviews with older athletes who are supporting his campaign.

Not long after, I got a call from Mets and Yankees slugger Darryl Strawberry. That was the beginning of an odyssey through the heroes and villains of my childhood: Over the next few weeks, I chatted with heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, stood backstage at a Trump rally with retired NFL star Lawrence Taylor, and traveled to meet boxing promoter Don King in person. Eventually, I talked to Trump himself.“

It will be really interesting to see the data on the Black vote after the election in November.

Not a single one of my Black family members, neighbors, co-workers, or friends has ever voiced something positive about Trump.

They are all aware of his history of being sued for racial discrimination in housing. The ones in the military are offended by his bone spurs and the terrible things he has said about dead and wounded servicemen and that no one in his family has ever joined the military. And the women especially hate him for his treatment of the women in his life and his anti-abortion turnaround. And none of them buy his fake piety.

This is of course my world. But pretty remarkable that the general consensus is anti-Trump given how much Republicans keep trying to make it seem that Black voters love him.

The Republicans are targeting Black males who promote and celebrate toxic masculinity and, specifically, toxic Black male culture. They are anti-Black and seek validation from White people, especially from White men. I do expect more of them will vote Republican.

It's remarkable how being a felon correlates positively with supporting (or working for) Trump, regardless of race or background. This is especially apparent in Trump's administration and the miscreant company he keeps.

Except Trump is now prohibited from associating with felons. He should watch out or his butt is going to be back in NYS court.

This is such a ridiculous article. Oh he says he has Black friends, he can’t be racist, let me go and fawn over them and see what they have to say! “Liberal media” my ass.

It’s almost like black men get arrested and prosecuted at a higher rate than white men that is crazy how could that be I mean america is known for its fair and equal treatment of black males and complete lack of racism especially in law enforcement and the court system never would I believe that the system might be broken or severely compromised it’s all a huge coincidence omg look a squirrel.

Darryl Strawberry

Former drug addict has beens.

Definitely not representative of black male political sentiment.

And....wait....Mike Tyson. Convicted rapist.

Trump is really rolling out the red carpet for these brothas.

Biden will win 90% of the black vote.

Don't belive the polls or a few votes from washed up black male athletes and rappers.

No

Trump has posted the same black womanhood at every event and black church filled with whites

Republicans are afraid of the black vote and are suing weekly to screw them over

Of the 9 black people who attended the rally at the church in Detroit, only one was a local and he wasn't even a congregant. The other 8 were bused in and go to a lot of Trump rallies.

So just like everything else Trump does, this charade around the black vote is also smoke and mirrors.
