Thoughts on the name Matilda, Tilly for short

DH and I can't decide on a name and I'm going to bat for this one. DH loves Olivia, Maddie, Lilly, and Sophia he loves a top 10 girls name.

So far he has hard vetoed Elizabeth, Katherine, Sabrina, Naomi and Rebecca

I like it. I prefer Tilda to Tilly but Tilly reminds me of Tillie Olsen who is one of my all-time favorite writers (a lot of her work is out of print but you can find her stories online various places).

My DH was like this too btw -- all the names he liked just happened to be the most popular names and he didn't really get why I didn't want to use like a top 5 name even if I liked it. We wound up with a top 50 name and the good news is that we almost never encounter other kids with that name (a few times but never at school or in any of her activities).

I think for men having a common name is less of a problem than it is for women. I have no idea why this is!

You can’t control the nn once they get to make school. I love Matilda and all the nn mentioned, but especially Tilly.

That's what I was going to suggest, since he likes Maddie, sell Matilda using "Mattie".

+1, this was going to be my suggestion too. It’s cute but can grow with her!

School isn't the issue. You just enroll your child with the nn as their "preferred name" and then teachers use it and kids will use it too. Most of the kids at my child's elementary don't even know her full name.

The bigger issue is that you can't control what nn your child will prefer. Sometimes kids decide they don't like the designated nn. Or that they don't like their full name and adopt a nn. Or want to shorten or change their nn. And if your kid decides this you have no control over it.

So if you name her Matilda nn Mattie and she decides she hates Mattie and want to go by Tilda you have to live with that.

So my suggestion is to choose a name where you are reasonably happy with the full name and every conceivable nn they might go with. I have a niece who goes by her first initial only. I have a friend whose DD has a lovely Scandinavian name and goes by a two letter nn she made up taken from the middle syllable in the name (not making this up).

You don't really have to worry about a school or peer group imposing a nn on your kid at this point but you need to remember your kid has free will and will not necessarily have the same taste in names that you do.

This says Hipster parents who think they're super clever and adorable. Same category as Delilah, Iris, stuff like that.

I don't love it. And Tilly seems too cutesy to me.
