School isn't the issue. You just enroll your child with the nn as their "preferred name" and then teachers use it and kids will use it too. Most of the kids at my child's elementary don't even know her full name.

The bigger issue is that you can't control what nn your child will prefer. Sometimes kids decide they don't like the designated nn. Or that they don't like their full name and adopt a nn. Or want to shorten or change their nn. And if your kid decides this you have no control over it.

So if you name her Matilda nn Mattie and she decides she hates Mattie and want to go by Tilda you have to live with that.

So my suggestion is to choose a name where you are reasonably happy with the full name and every conceivable nn they might go with. I have a niece who goes by her first initial only. I have a friend whose DD has a lovely Scandinavian name and goes by a two letter nn she made up taken from the middle syllable in the name (not making this up).

You don't really have to worry about a school or peer group imposing a nn on your kid at this point but you need to remember your kid has free will and will not necessarily have the same taste in names that you do.[/quote]
