What percentage of kids get into gifted and talented programs?

It''s not the best look but I admit I was surprised and disappointed that my kid didn't make it given what I thought I knew about their test scores etc. Apparently they made 2/3 required academic test markers. Anyone have a sense of what percentage of kids get in? Just curious and trying to make myself feel better. (Sorry I know this question is obnoxious).

This is data from over a decade ago, but then it was a little over a third: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/district/about/strategicplan/annualreport/2010/goal2/milestone2datapoint1.pdf

It's not obnoxious. I was disappointed when my son didn't make it in, so I get it. He is an adult now, and over the arc of his life, I saw that he had plenty of opportunities and had his course of personal victories that set him well forward in life. The chances are good that your child will flourish .

Imo it’s just a blow to the parent’s ego: the kid doesn’t care unless you make it a big deal. As much as dcum claims they don’t care or it’s NBD, they do care and are just blowing smoke.

Fwiw I was disappointed when my kid didn’t get identified at 2nd grade but then got identified in 3rd grade when the reading criteria switched to MAP-R. Your kid has 3 more chances to get identified.

Both my kids were identified but I don’t think I ever mentioned it to them. It makes no difference at school and didn’t seem worth telling them.

Do they get placed in different homeroom classes if they are identified?

No. Nothing changes. Bragging rights only.

You get into the ES and MS magnet school lottery, and ES ELC (literacy enrichment) if available, and the teacher is supposed to provide enrichment worksheets.

OP here--man, if the kids are really going to be in the same classes I feel so much better. I was worried their friends would all be in the group class and they would be left out but sounds like that won't be the case.

In MoCo, all the children are above average.

This is not true for 2nd grade GT identification.

Literally nothing changes. In 3rd all kids are evaluated for CES/ELC. It does not matter whether kids were or weren’t identified in 2nd. I know kids who were not identified in 2nd who made the lottery in 3rd and entered CES in 4th. The 3rd grade evaluation, which is unrelated to the 2nd grade evaluation, is the process that makes a difference and can lead to different school or class placements in 4th.

No you don’t. The lottery and the gifted identification are different processes

Something like 75% I think.

What’s the issue?
