Einstein course offerings

Anonymous
We are zoned for Einstein (kid currently in 7th grade) so I took a look at their course bulletin:

https://coursebulletin.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/SchoolCourseCatalogs/School/04789/top

Is this an accurate list? Under “computer science and IT” I get only two entries, and they are both unrelated (IB theory of knowledge). There is no AP physics under sciences. In general few courses seem to be offered except for arts.

Can parents of current students comment?

That's wrong.

Here are the 24-25 course offerings at Einstein:

Since Einstein is an IB school, they have fewer AP courses than other schools. But they usually have an IB version instead. The science department went all-IB a few years ago. You don't need to be in the IB program to take individual IB classes.

Thanks very much, super useful!

Are IB science courses comparable to AP?

IB in general is considered either equal or superior to AP by college admissions officers. They’re considered more work, more writing, more thinking. My kids are in an only AP school so I’m not an IB pusher. But I can’t speak specifically to the sciences and how they might compare to the tougher APs like Physics C.

This is what we were told. We are told a lot of colleges don't take IB classes and don't bother. It's an issue as Einstein doesn't have a lot of higher level and AP classes.

MoCo college admissions results don't beat this out.

If by that you mean admissions results, that’s because of the schools. Einstein isn’t going to outperform Whitman in college admissions. It would be poor analysis to attribute that to IB vs AP.

Its a problem when Whitman offers higher level math and science and Einstein doesn't so kids are sent to MC.

Can you give examples of higher level courses that kids are sent to MC for? Do they take them virtually or are they supposed to go to MC during school hours (or after)?

Anything after calculus. They either go 1/2 day, after school or virtually. MC offers something different each year. MCPS belief in equity does not apply to Einstein.

Remember, electives and other courses may be cut due to budget constraints. Hopefully your kid doesn't have their heart set on something on the chopping block. We had a meeting about this last week. :/

Are you at Einstein?
