My son is in a magnet school, it looks like he may get a 4.5 weighted average GPA. He has been in the base school Track team and has about 2/3 extra curriculars. He is a good Maths student.
Is a T20 anyway possible? |
Unlikely, doesn’t sound “pointy” enough. My 4.92 gpa magnet kid isn’t applying to T20s, focusing on T30-50 and maybe some high-ranked SLACs. Average ECs similar to your DC. |
What matters the most is where your DC falls in his class. If 4.5 represents top 5% in his class then maybe but agree with PP usually hooked, or ultra-pointy, kids focus on T20 schools. Plus strong math is dime-a-dozen around here. |

Yes I realize lots of good Math kids out there. I worry about lack of ECs. |
If their student has a 4.5 in FCPS that would make their GPA comparable to an MCPS 4.92 since MCPS gives 5s for honors, but does require students to take 1-2 non-honors classes. |
Test scores? Major? If a competitive STEM major highly unlikely. |

OP, if you’re not willing to provide more info, you won’t get meaningful advice. |
Op here,
He is a Sophomore now. He thinks he wants something STEM related. He hasn't done the actual SAT yet as he is still Sophomore. So right now am just thinking- as I dont see him getting higher than a 4.5-4.7 unweighted GPA He took one AP class this year - next year planning to do 6. |
sorry I meant weighted GPA. |
. Is he an URM? |
No he isn’t. |
Is he being recruited for a sport? |
No isn't either. |
Do number of APs help? |
