How much to movers cost these days?

Anonymous
We are moving for the first time in 15 years, from one 4500 sq ft home to another in the near vicinity. Any estimates on how much movers these days cost, racially if you have them pack a bunch of your stuff for you (kitchen, I’m thinking of you).

We did a similar move in late 2022 (as with everything prices have probably gone up a little bit) although our house was smaller. 3000 sq ft to 3000sq ft, about a mile away. Our estimate ranged from $215 per hour to $325 per hour for about 10-12 hours of work. We actually ended up booking a company that did a great job for roughly $2000.

I'm booking for a moving company to move 2500 sq ft to 2500 sq ft a few miles away for $189/hr for 4 people. Not sure how long it will be but I predict it will take about 8 hours because they will just be moving not packing.

Do you guys mind sharing company names?

I’m not sure of cost for what the OP is looking for but Metropolitan Moving and Storage moved my mom five times in five years (horrible choices made-she needed more and more care that we were chasing in the pursuit of independence). I always had them pack and move and have been pleased with their services. This last move I also had them unpack. They are very professional.

Wow that’s cheap! We did a move from a 1500 square foot townhouse (multiple stairs) to a 2200 SFH and it cost us more in 2019! We were also only 1 mile away. Ours took about 12 hours I think because of the stairs and the truck was not huge. We also bought them lunch and dinner and had a cooler of water, electrolyte drinks, coffees in a can. We packed everything up before they arrived. Don’t forget to tip as it’s hard work.

I used Jones Bros Moving, and they did a great job! I don't remember what I paid, but it was cheaper than the other companies, and they wrapped everything! I also rented bins to avoid dealing with the boxes. It was great; they delivered the bins a month before the move, and they came with packing paper and labels. They stack easily, no tape needed and they pick up from your new location whenever you have finished unpacking! TOTAL game changer!

Much smaller place than yours and we did our own packing (for clothes, kitchen stuff and etc) recently. The move from a 1k Sq ft apartment to a 2000 Sq ft TH (withs four levels) cost us $1500. The really time consuming thing was moving everything from apartment to truck (movers told us apartment tend to take longer than houses, with houses you just park truck outside house sod. Unloading the truck was fairly quick.

Here and Now Movers was like $200 an hour. Took them about 2.5 hours to load, travel and unload.

Honestly, the price will jump significantly with any movers if you're asking them to pack for you. The only thing the movers did for us was move the furniture.

We just moved last week and used Metropolitan moving and storage for a local
move of 10 miles. We did most of the packing ourselves except for artwork and we had a 2500 sq ft house. They brought 2 trucks. It took 6 men about 6 hours with a short lunch break and we paid about $3000. It was a very smooth experience.

We are moving from a 2500 sq ft home into one a bit smaller; FCC to Vienna, so not far. We are packing up ourselves. Our mover estimate is $2,000.

NP. Did anyone have movers pack them as well? After seeing all of our military movers and their pack outs I'd really like to splurge on that but I have no idea what something like that would cost.

Costs do not include them packing for you; we packed and unpacked our own boxes

$2k-$3k-ish to move out. It's by the hour so the better prepped you are for when they arrive and if you can actually help carry stuff out, that helps you. Disassemble furniture items if needed. Paper and plastic/tape up major furniture items in advance so that they don't have to when they get there (we didn't know to do this, but now that I know, would do that next time - it took them some time to wrap everything).

Make sure to confirm what's needed for dresser drawers (originally, they said they would come out, but then movers preferred to move dressers with drawers in).

$700 per month of keeping items in storage if you need it/don't move your stuff to new location immediately. Cost will depend on how much stuff you have and how many storage units are required to store it.

$2k-3kish to move in (again by the hour so helps you to help carry stuff in)

Plus the cost of boxes and packaging material, furniture pads, mattress slipo covers, etc so a few hundred there.

Commonwealth Movers did a great job for us and it wasn’t too expensive.

I paid about $1400 to move a one bed across town. $160 an hour for 3 guys with Anytime movers. It took 6 hours to move apartments, but it was an apartment to apartment with a restrictions on loading and stairs. I think a house could have taken as little as four hours.
