LOL at the idea that Afghans will be filling up STEM classes. Maybe the kids of rich U.S-linked members of the Ghani government, but in general? Look at the European experience with Afghan refugees. |
I suppose you think that the white government taking indigenous kids from their families to assimilate them into white culture was a good idea. Or how the Chinese government is trying to force assimilation of the Uighurs? These folks have been through somethiing you will never imagine, god willing, and you want to throw them into a foreign place with no community support because you are afraid that they may not assimilate to your ideals of Americanism. Wow. |
Why don't you talk to the ex-military folks who helped get 400 of these "refugees" out? Tell them they might be brining in Taliban sympathizers. |
?? I would love it if you would elaborate on a different thread. This is interesting. |
| Isn’t Dulles just set up to be the arrival and processing point but many will move where they already have family (the case with many in this group( and where resettlement groups are helping them? |
The kids of the Hmong refugees plopped down in Minnesota post Vietnam have done well as have the kids of the Burmese in Texas. Young kids assimilate quickly. |
DP - brown parents won’t allow it. |

I have very fond memorIes of childhood friends made from the various refugee waves that swept through the area in the 1970s and 80s.
Persians, Afghans, Cambodians, Vietnamese, and Ethiopians newly arrived to the neighborhood we as kids had on a very vague idea of what some of them left behind. They were kids and we were all happy to have new kids to play with. My memory is that most of the children spoke flawless English. Even if their parents spoke very little. I also learned that kids from all over the world play some variation of dodge ball. Bring them on. I love this area. Refugees are gone for this co R |
| Let's be clear that "assimilation" is not a valid or appropriate goal. Why would PP need immigrants to lose their foodways and languages, and why should he/she object if they are able to open their own private schools, religious or otherwise? |
We were going in the destroy Al Qaeda and defend our country, not to “help them.” |
Some degree of assimilation is necessary for a stable society in the long run. Unless, of course, those who assimilate very little/not at all are content to remain perpetual outsiders, not influencing the larger society and not being influenced by it. |
Actually, I am pretty sure this is true. Heads up, if you are a US citizen - the State Dept. will try its best to evacuate you from war zones, but you are expected to reimburse the US taxpayer for this and you have to sign a promissory note before you get on the plane. If you have a US passport you aren't a refugee. I have no issue with supporting refugees - these folks are going to spend years and lots of $ to become legal permanent residents or citizens. |
This is true. My brother was once evacuated by State from a country in turmoil and he had to pay thousands of dollars. |
