Liar. Kids are in school.

My kindergartner is still home 3 days/week despite virtual learning being developmentally inappropriate and there being no safety reason to keep this model. Why should we accept less than Fairfax and Loudoun are able to deliver?

CDC guidelines say otherwise.

How? His class is already sitting together all in one room with the teacher and assistant.

Where do they eat lunch?

In the classroom.

Our youngest kids should be back full time. If you don't believe that is safe, please understand that you are in a shrinking minority of parents. You can call me an APE (I'm not in that group) or a Covidiot (I'm not) or whatever you want, but the truth is that most teachers, parents, and principals think elementary should be back in school full time. We've seen it done safely in states with far larger caseloads and fewer safety precautions (see the entire south last winter, to my surprise). There's no reason we can't do it here.

So they eat <6' apart? Or do they break out into the two rooms for lunch?

“We all eat lunch at the same time. Why are you asking?”

-my kid just now

in the same room?

Yes. That’s what he said. All together in the same room. I think I know who you are and I know you are obsessed with lunch, but most of us are not. Truly. I’m am not a crazy fringe person, this is a mainstream view at this point.

I'm most certainly NOT who you think I am. You think there is only one person who thinks indoor eating <6' is a bad idea?

I agree that more effort should be made for getting K-2 back in the classrooms as much as possible. I also didn't realize that kids were eating lunch in the classrooms together <6'. So if that is deemed acceptable now by APS (ignoring CDC), then bring back K-2 in more days. Biggest obstacle of course is transportation. Not sure how that'd play out.

Exactly this! I talked to Miranda in-person and was quite impressed. I read Mary's proposals and was underwhelmed.

What did she say that impressed you? Anything of substance? What are her proposals?

You should get on her email list where she talks about more issues. What I liked about her is that she understands what it's like to be an APS parent. She shares the frustrations I have, as well as seeing what's good. As you know, school board's main job is to ask tough questions and hold APS accountable. I trust Miranda to do that far more than I trust Mary to do that.

I was curious about what impressed you since you made the comment. So...just that she has the same frustrations as you? Obviously return-to-school would be a common frustration for you. What else?

Return to school obviously. But also over-reliance on iPads. Not enough teaching of fundamentals at the early elementary level. Concern about APS not doing well enough for Special Education students. Etc. I wasn't keeping notes, but we talked for a while, and I was impressed. She also has a very compelling personal story about how APS failed her family (and lots of others like hers) with the handling of the pandemic, and a broader sense of the harm it does to stay closed forever. It was clear she's been following APS very closely this year and advocating for what she believes in, and also that she knows what the job is she is asking to have. That is to say, I didn't get the sense that she doesn't know that school board is a largely thankless job, but that she's willing to take it on for the good of others.

And then several people raved here about Mary's great "thinking" on back to school, etc. and I found it sloppy and poorly done. So yes, Miranda has my vote. She does a lot of playground meet-ups. Go meet her.

I think their point may be that Mary actually put some thought into possible solutions vs. just having concerns.

Name one proposal, thoughtful or not, that Miranda has put out. Other than OPEN NOW. Schools are open now. They will be more open come fall, with virtually no COVID mitigation planned other than masks. It will look like before times. By the time Miranda would take office, APS will need to be focusing on other issues. Miranda is irrelevant.

DP, but as a general matter, SB candidates don't run based on proposals for specific procedural issues that are supposed to be addressed by the Superintendent's office rather than the SB. So it's a little odd to hold Miranda to a standard that generally doesn't apply just because Mary has put out some pictures that are largely irrelevant to the race because the whole issue will have been addressed before the election.

Mary isn't running based on any proposal either. ?

Real question: If Miranda Turner is the APE candidate, then is Mary Kadera the Smart Restart candidate? It's a shame that two polarizing groups are running candidates.

Nope. Mary isn’t on the steering committee for Smart Restart. Is she even a member?

My impression is that she’s been busy with CCPTA this year.

Thank you. Mary's campaign may want to get control over rogue actors then, because it seems someone foiaed the name of the person who foia'ed Mary's emails to APS and outed them. Makes her campaign look dirty.

I would like to vote for her, but sh!t like this makes me apprehensive.

I'm not following. How do we know it was someone in her campaign?

How does it make Mary look dirty that someone related to Miranda's campaign foia'd Mary's emails?

I'm not the OP, but I think I feel the same way. Mary was above all of this foia drama, even getting ahead of the story until someone foia-ed the first foia. Why would anyone spend money to be petty like that?

Unless they decided to play dirty politics like Turner's friends did. The cherry on top is to post to a troll twitter account that just exists to throw APE under the bus.

Mary's campaign looks bad, no matter if she was directly involved or not.

Again, I'm not the first responder, and maybe they have a better response.

I don't know if it was anyone in her campaign who owns that twitter account. But I agree with the original poster in that it makes both candidates look bad.

Turner's campaign, because one of APE's outspoken members foia-ed Kadera's APS emails, for what purpose, I don't know.

And Kadera's campaign, because not only did someone else decide to foia the foia on her behalf (again, why would you pay APS to foia someone, it is not cheap), but then to post it to a troll twitter account. It's the APES**** twitter account that's making me think someone is a little too invested in bringing down APE and Miranda Turner.

The only thing that's clear is that someone hates APE so much that they may bring Kadera down with them. And that's sad, because I actually have a lot of respect for Mary.
