That is true and thank you. I'd like to say that I think a poster said it best previously with "now that dust is settling". Talented girls almost always gravitate to ECNL. With the DA folding, the GAL unfolding, the movement of MW to VDA, the coaching staff swaps of SYC/LMVSC, and lastly COVID let to a lot less of that movement this year. It will return in full force.

Funny. Our DD and 2 of her friends are leaving McLean this year for Arlington. MYS is floundering and making excuses for its performance. Lately, they’ve made a big push to get kids from other clubs to come to them. We just figured that if McLean is trying so hard to get Arlington kids to come to them, Arlington must actually be developing players. I’m surprised about all this ECNL/GA debate - it’s like AFC v. NFC or NL v. AL. No serious player cares about the league. (Probably because they don’t have to)

Player "A" and Player "B" are interested for the same roster spot at same D1 school. Both have similar grades and SAT scores.

Player "A" is a talented leading player for a good GA Club but the competition against her is weak because of GA clubs. She shines against this competition in front of recruiting coach.

Player "B" is a talented role player at a good ECNL team. Her competition is extremely strong and fast. She hold her own and has good showings in her showcases.

Who is the coach going to offer the roster position to?

You see, "serious" players are going to understand that in order to be better, you have to play against better or play with the best. Otherwise, you are taking the easy way out and that is not something many benefit from.

So let’s say the coach can watch FCV v Arlington or BRYC v Loudoun, where does she go? Clearly, she goes to watch the most competitive match with the most promising local players - FCV v Arlington. She also realizes that if she is going to bother to watch an ECNL match that is worthwhile, she’ll have to drive Richmond. ECNL does not equal strong competition (there’s a reason they have to weed out a bunch of the teams for their national playoffs). Neither the ECNL badge nor the GA badge mean much. No college coach that is worth her salt is going to say, “hey it’s ECNL, they must be good.” That’s a recipe for losing.

The talent pool of the GA isn't even close to ECNL nationwide. In every year 2007 and up, ECNL clubs outnumber GA Clubs in the top 100 rankings by a ratio of almost 4:1. Only 4 GA teams are ranked in the top 5 across 6 years of age groups (2007-2002) as compared 23 ECNL teams. It actually only gets worse from there comparing the two leagues.

Sure, there might be more teams but the quality of competition one could argue is just as much outnumbered at a pace of 4:1. These are statistical facts. The question I ask you is, do you want your DD playing against the best or are you happy just hoping to get into GA Champions League and get top notch competition there.

Regardless, FCV is a highly respected club however, it's competition is not. Nobody is going to say, hey look at this quality win over PA Classics, Sporting Delaware, Metro United, Philly Ukranian, or Cedar Stars, yet alone the other teams. It's just facts.

In the end, the player recruits the coach first, and then the coach the player followed by other nuances. So one could say it doesn't matter but remember this, the coach will see the competition as DD plays against them as well. That coach will see a difference between the skill levels of ECNL vs GA too. It's no different than that kid from Instagram posting highlights against horrible competition, and you say to yourself, why are they posting highlights against Alexandria White?!?!?

The quality of competition at 120 clubs is decreased. ECNL is now just large and almost any kid with a modicum of skill can find a roster spot on a ECNL team.

At least ECNL is making Elite accessible to everyone. With a 120 clubs only Oprah can hand out more roster spots.

Your obviously a U14 parent. The coach goes to the game with the players they are interested in recruiting. You honestly think college coaches know the standings of your U15 youth team?

They know the player they want to watch and the time and field. They know the club coach and that’s it. They are not there to just watch games.

In all seriousness, no one is leaving an ECNL team to join FCV or any GA team. That would be really stupid for an aspiring college player unless they were riding pine and would shift into a starting position and role.

ECNL vs GA is not even a debate but it doesn’t mean FCV or Arlington aren’t good teams. I take the hate towards FCV and not towards Arlington is due to the defensiveness of the parents who are struggling to internalize that GA and FCV isn’t the land of milk and honey as they were sold when they were recruited into the team.

It is odd that no teams in particular are mentioned, just the league. And on top of it, this seems to be a very League centric point of view completely dismissing the DD’s club, team and coach.

It seems to me, if my kid was on a particular team and I wanted to improve that team I’d talk about the team and not the league.

What does this have to do with Richmond? They have ECNL so they’re good and I don’t believe any of the Richmond teams are trying to get into GA. Plus the whole point of this thread is to discuss ECNL vs GA.
