Tiger Mom’s husband kept trying to bang his students

Sad guy.

I took two classes with Akhil and I absolutely did not notice him discriminating against students from state schools, of which there were many. Frankly, he was too absorbed in himself to know where any given student went to undergrad. He, like many other professors at YLS, did seem to hone on on students who were connected (eg kids or other legal scholars, judges, famous journalists or politicians) or the ones who were known as “stars”—these professors all want to glom onto a “star” to be the mentor to the future appellate judge or legal hotshot.
The quote that is given probably has some truth to it, in that YAle is filled with people who were at the top of whatever environment they came from, and they can’t all be at the top at YLS. Some people adjust to that better than others. I went to an egg-heady SLAC and I we blown away by how egg-heady YLS was.

Eh, Amar was my small group professor, and absolutely was a snob (as well as yes, being self-absorbed, and yes, a pretty good professor otherwise). This quote does not surprise me at all.

I think Amar has said worse things than this quote from the article -- I think the rest of the comments under the twitter post note that he has been called out for advising students considering YLS that it might not be for them if they are coming from a state school because they probably won't be able to keep up, or something to that effect. Then Amar apparently called the twitter guy and said multiple students were misunderstanding him on multiple occasions or something like that so ymmv. Not sure whether YLS legit has stopped Amar from talking to prospective students or not ha.

For some reason this doesn’t surprise me at all.

I low-key liked Tiger Mom (the book) as kind of an insight into her wild mind. It was a really entertaining read.

But then the couple said that Black people aren’t as financially well-off as whites because they have a victim mentality and I was so done with them.

Isn’t the daughter a grifter too and did rotc training to get into an elite law school or something but never actually served?

YLS are the smartest, most aggressive and most arrogant students in America. Spare me that any of these ruthless conniving strivers were harassed by anyone. YLS students are age 23 to 30–we’re not talking about babies here—and they would be quick to take advantage of the angle here; in other words, toy with and exploit the horny old man for all he’s worth.

That certainly does not excuse his lecherous behavior.

The kids would have been better off to grow up in a well-adjusted home without a helicopter freak as a mother.

She needed to have married an Asian-American person with morals. She married a White man. What was she expecting? Fidelity? Family values? Morals?

yeah, it's gross. i'm sure the tiger cub is a talented woman, but her mom vouched for kavanaugh's morality and decency with women during the confirmation hearings and now "coincidentally" her daughter gets hired.

I don't agree with this. I went to Yale undergrad (and not Yale law) and I was still totally messed up when I got hit on by a partner later when interviewing at law firms. Like, it messed me up for a while. Just because you get into YLS doesn't mean you're a shark with dead eyes.

Not everyone has the quick reflexes to deal with an advance from a person in a position of power over them. Mark Maron has talked about this on his podcast about Louis CK -- and how he sympathized with women who had had this happen to them because you don't always have the wherewithal to reject an unwanted advance when it comes from a mentor-type person and it can mess you up later.

I don't actually think they're republicans, are they? I thought they were liberal but I could be wrong. I thought sponsoring Kavanaugh was just opportunism, not politics.

I agree with this. It's even more awkward when it happens repeatedly over a long period of time of escalating inappropriate but 'grey area' comments and actions. From speculation about your sex life and prying, graphic questions, then next thing you know they are sliding their hand up your leg when you meet to ask for clarification on course content. In the moment you freeze and don't know how to react, and because it isn't penetrative rape you feel like there's nothing tangible to report, but it doesn't make it okay or not traumatizing to have your professor squeezing your butt or touching your chest/leg/etc. In my case it was basically a choice between laughing along (and then dealing with being messed up like PP) or reporting it and ruining my career. I chose to laugh along, but I would never want my daughters to go into that environment.

19:03 I mean I also don't agree with the person who said they don't feel for the students. I agree with the PP who shared their experience.
