PP, it's 2020, not 1980. Long past time to retire "inner city" as a code phrase for people who are poor and Black. |
What the hell is the difference? But the last I checked, MCPS is not inner city. LOL |
|
I see white privilege is firmly in place.
School is not childcare. Remember that although childcare is a result of school it is NOT the primary function. Teachers do not get a license in childcare nor training. The primary function of public school is to TEACH your child. If you want a babysitter find an open childcare center or get a babysitter. It’s going to be DL, deal with the sadness and loss but not by blaming teachers. |
It was MCPS stopped teachers from teaching any new materials after the schools were closed for in person learning after March 15. What was the reason? Many families have no wifi, not enough chrome books or both. How MCPS will ensure that ALL the families are able to provide a equal DL environment? If the achievement gap persists or widen after a few weeks? Will BOE blame the middle class families Who supplement their children’s education via POTS or private tutor? |
+100. we care very much, but what are we supposed to do about it right now? Pull my child out of private school? Have my neighbor NOT hire the teacher they have lined up to teach her 3 kids? OP, Please tell us what we are supposed to do about it right now that will satisfy you. FWIW - one of the best ways to fix some of these inequities is to VOTE. And to vote for thoughtful people who care about fixing these inequities...... |

If school is unsafe why hasn’t Montgomery County barred private schools from opening? They have the power to tell privately owned restaurants and hair salons to close, so why not private schools?
I think we all know the answer... |
That’s not the issue. If public schools are unsafe, so are private schools. Private schools should be ordered shut by the government, the same way they closed other private entities in March and April. If it really is a public health issue, close the private schools. But that would upset the people who bankroll the politicians, so obviously they don’t. There should be mass protests in the streets about this. But of course no one is bringing up this corruption and disparate treatment on 24/7 news channels and the press because they’re elitists and classists who have their kids in private school and it suits their interests, obviously. |
Msde has the power to shut down these home private schools but will they? |
|
I don’t believe this is correct...march in the streets to close down private schools.
My children attend MCPS. Private schools have a much lower enrollment rate. They can easily move classrooms around to accommodate social distancing. Many have sprawling campuses and can hold classes outside; this was common practice prior to COVID. Many private schools are: Testing Sterilizing Planning March in the streets because MSCP has not put in the effort to make in person school a possibility. COVID started at the same time for both public and private schools. From the Bullis Website: Prior to the opening of school, COVID-19 testing will be required and will be available on campus for all students, faculty, and staff. Testing and screening will be available on campus periodically thereafter or can be independently arranged by individuals or families, with results provided to Bullis. Students (with the help of parents) as well as staff will be required to complete a daily health questionnaire. Preventive Measures Bullis is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for students and staff. We are adhering to CDC guidelines, State and County recommendations, and consulting with our own panel of medical and legal experts. Multiple preventive measures are in place on campus, and students, faculty and staff, and all campus visitors will be expected to follow safe practices at all times. Health and safety measures at Bullis include: In addition to our school nurse, another healthcare worker will be employed. Physical distancing of at least six (6) feet will be maintained whenever possible between persons on campus whether indoors or outdoors. Cloth masks or face coverings will be required in all areas on campus. Bullis will supply students and staff with five (5) washable cloth masks, so that a clean mask can be worn each weekday when on campus. Frequent washing of hands and the use of hand sanitizer will be required among students and staff, with support for younger students to understand the importance of washing hands, wearing masks, and keeping a distance. Hand sanitizer and hand-wipes dispensers are now installed throughout campus in classrooms, offices, and hallways. Cleaning and Disinfecting Our Facilities teams and cleaning crews will disinfect and clean restrooms, classrooms, and campus areas, including door handles and keypads, regularly. Between classes, faculty will disinfect hightouch spaces in classrooms. Portable UV lights will be utilized in restrooms throughout the day to help purify spaces. Plexiglass barriers are being installed in the Dining Hall, reception areas, and some offices and classroom spaces to help protect students, faculty, and staff against exposure and transmission. In Case of Illness Strict protocols will be in place for anyone who becomes ill while on campus and the School will have the ability to quarantine on campus as needed. Students or staff members who have colds or any symptoms of illness will be expected to stay home. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms should notify the School immediately (symptoms may include coughing, chills, fever, shaking, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, loss of taste/smell). Should an individual test positive for COVID-19, the School will have four trained tracer and tracking teams ready to inform individuals who may have been in contact with Our Food Services staff will create healthy meals to serve safely and efficiently following strict protocols. Boxed lunches and pre-packaged salads distributed to designated areas can be picked up by students and staff and enjoyed in designated eating areas. In a change to previous practice, students will be permitted to bring their own lunches from home. These lunches should contain minimal allergens for the sake of others, and contain no soda or candy; items that need to be kept cold should be packed in thermal containers or with ice packs. Advisors and staff will collect information each week regarding meals taken at school or brought from home. Designated eating areas around campus will be arranged for physical distancing and will adhere to all health and safety precautions. Faculty supervision for lunchtimes will include Lower and Middle School teachers eating with their students in classrooms, while Upper School students will go to specific areas during lunch. Appropriate spacing and cleanliness protocols will be strictly maintained during lunchtimes. Transportation and Bus Service Bus service and bus routes will be adapted to carry fewer students while observing safety measures and physical distancing. Students and drivers will be required to wear masks while on the buses. Seating will be limited to one student per seat, with siblings and family members allowed to sit together in order to maintain safe distances while allowing social interaction. Windows will be open to outside air flow, and daily cleaning and sanitizing of buses will further ensure safe transportation. |
| I love how public school parents now seem to care about equity when the decisions of their school district negatively affect them. None of you cared about it before. You happily bought homes in "nice" neighborhoods so your kids could go to school with other kids like themselves (not poor). Now that your kid isn't going to go to school, you seem to care about equity. |
Oh it's more than that they claim that they bought a house in a certain neighborhood and that entitles him to always go to that school or else they're housing will devalue |
| I love how now everyone is concerned about equity. Face it - you are still only concerned about your own kid but using the equity argument to try to get schools to reopen. Cute. |
ha ha posted before i saw the post above mine (which states basically the same). we are 2 different posters to make that clear. |
Ironic, that parents whose kids attend the segregated schools in Wetern moco have suddenly become equity converts. |
| Private schools will shut down too just as soon as a few students, teachers and parents die of COVID. Give it time. |
