How can someone be born and raised in the DC area yet still be racist?

Unfortunate realization: virtually 99% of all crime in DC is committed by youngish black males. I returned here after college fully woke and somewhat strident about it, but over the last many years, I've reached the point where I can't reconcile the progressive dogma with the realty of DC's crime statistics. And I really have no patience left for street criminals and shooters.

I don't think noticing this makes me racist, but I'm sure others disagree.

You aren't wrong to notice aa crime but the problem is that the crime stems from economic inequality stemming from systemic slavery stemming from slavery. So pointing out aa crime comes off racist to some as it does nothing to acknowledge/address/solve the continued issues still existing today- it only victim blames. Yes criminals are victims too- just not always tragic or sympathetic figures. Hard to feel sorry for someone when they rob you/assault you. I know this has turned some of my coworkers very racist- the things they say would NEVER have come out of their mouths before they too were victimized.

Really? So, every or even most economically disadvantaged person commits crime?

Sorry but your theory is flawed.

Crime stems from - in no particular order- bad parenting, lack of God in ones life, poor choices, bad peer group, and being taught that life doesn’t matter.

You can’t be serious.

Today, completely and absolutely serious. And, the lack of God in our public discourse doesn’t help either.

When God is used in public discourse, He's used to oppress. So, no thank you.

Not true, if God is used in His real sense, like our founders did. He is the source of all freedom and liberty.

You are nutty. I am a staunch atheist and so are most people I know. You aren't fooling anyone.

Tolerance works both ways, PP. Chill on name calling the poster that references their belief in God.

DP. Yes, the important thing here isn’t that PP is a religious nut job, it’s that PP uses religion as an excuse for her/his racism.

PP who made the God comment. How in the world do you get that (bolded?) Ny church is one of the most diverse in the city and we love all, as Jesus did.

Oh, and to the "staunch atheist." Of course most people you know are atheists. You have chosen a very limited world view in which to marinate yourself.

Not believing in some fairy tale told to control the masses doesn’t give someone a limited world view. It probably actually allows them to understand more about all religions. But I digress, I wish everyone had ignored the silly god part of this and focused on the “being taught that life doesn’t matter”. This is exactly what BLM should be focused on, teaching black people, from birth, that their lives DO matter and they shouldn’t throw them away with violence or petty street crime. You can both accept that our society is fundamentally racist and expect personal responsibility.

Um, you are the one that called out the God mention and called attention to it.

You do realize there are more than just 2 people who post on DCUM right. Roll your stupid eyes right back at yourself.

If an emoticon pissed you off so much you may be the nut job on this thread, PP...

I always wonder where yall live. I am 50, black, have lived in DC (the city, not the DMV) for almost 20 years and have never been a victim of a crime of any kind -- never mugged, no car break-ins, no home break-ins, nothing. But to hear other people tell it, they are living in an apocalyptic war zone.

White upper class culture has a low tolerance level for perceived discomfort. White people have been socialized to expect a life without road blocks. So if a white person even witnesses a crime, they freak out and plot moving to the suburbs where they believe they will be safer. There was a thread a couple months ago asking why people moved to suburbs. I was surprised how many people said they moved because of "crime". This drives opposition to affordable housing, transportation equity and desegregating schools. Also white people know how to work the system and reap rewards from it.

Actually, it’s long been noticed that racism tends to increase in areas that are more diverse. The least racist places tend to be areas that are very no. Diverse such as Vermont and the Pacific NW.

White people are so horrible. They move to the suburbs instead of staying in the city to desegregate schools!

If you are raised by monsters you will become one. The racists are made racists by their parents.

Along with all the horrible Asian, South Asian, Hispanic and yes, even Black people who move to the suburbs for safer neighborhood and better schools.

Humans are inherently racist. It will never go away.

I disagree. Humans may indeed be inherently "tribal" -- but there are many ways that we have of delineating the members of our "tribes".

You can feel smug all you want, but lack of integration and affordable housing create conditions where crime grows. If you leave the city. you are part of structural racism. You deprive poor black people of resources that they need.

I was not a racist until i got to DC. We are diplomats family who’s embassy unfortunately wont pay for private schools and we have to put my white kid into the public predominantly black DC school. After my child was physically beaten three times and bullied numerous times by black kids and black administrations didnt do anything, black mayor didnt do anything and a black (then) President didnt do anything, I became a racist. And i am proudly stand by my opinion in my experience. If any black person can stand up and change it, i will gladly listen. But so far, i have not heard any single voice. I treat their silence as support of violence.

I’m sorry your child was hurt and the school was unresponsive to the attacks and bullying.

And I’m sorry he or she is growing up with a racist parent who is perpetuating the system.

Well that's too bad.

What a mealy-mouthed response. Useless.
