Take that, criminals! He is raising awareness of gun violence!

Because some people in DC have never heard of....gun violence?

Oy! Typical of Todd. Has anyone on this forum actually met Todd? Have you met Janeese? I've met them both and she is clearly SO much more intelligent and well informed than he is. Ward 4 needs a smarter Council Member and someone who actually wants to get something done other than change license plates. Face palm!

Heh.

Differences of opinion on crime/policing policy seems to be one of the main reasons people will decide between Todd and George. How is that discussion off topic?

I've lived in Ward 4 for a long time, and I can't remember when crime was worse. If you want to blame someone, blame Brandon Todd. He's the one who's been in office while this has been happening. And he never does anything about it. One of the local ANC people ihas been at war with Todd over crime because Todd never wants to do anything about it. Personally, I'm skeptical that whoever is on city council is going to make any difference. If you want to blame someone, blame the police. Isn't preventing crime their job?

So, you agree the crime discussion is on topic?

Whether you think crime cuts towards Todd or George for a voting issue, it sure seems like it is relevant to the topic.

DC has the largest police force in America -- by far (on a per capita basis). Its officers are well paid. If you're a sergeant, you probably make six figures. At some point it seems like the police have to take responsibility for rising crime. I'm not sure what debating the origins of crime has to do with the city council's race. If you want to blame a politician, blame Bowser, since she's the only one with the power to fire the police chief.

It’s not just the number of police. It is also other laws and policies regarding the criminal justice system. For better or worse, and people clearly disagree, the district places a heavy emphasis on restorative justice with laws such as the Youth Act. There are many instances where someone is released (both pre and post conviction) in DC, where the person would face time or more time elsewhere. The council clearly has an influence on these policies.

Even just looking at it in terms of the police, it is not simply their number. It is what they are allowed to do and whether they can have vice squads, for example.

The mayor and police chief undoubtedly have influence in these areas. But to say the council doesn’t have an important view - both with respect to tangible policy and more abstract influence - is crazy.

Crime/justice/policing is a very important issue in city politics - for people on all sides of the issue who may disagree on substance - to say it isn’t relevant to a discussion on a council race is astounding.

Policy is extremely important, which is why Brandon Todd is pushing legislation to create new license plates that say "End Gun Violence."

Take that, criminals! He is raising awareness of gun violence!

So?

Maybe Todd’s an idiot and his policy proposal would be wholly ineffective.

That doesn’t in anyway respond to a post arguing that a candidate’s views on crime are a very legitimate issue to consider in a council race.

If Todd’s views are as dumb as you suggest, that’s a good reason to vote against him.

OP here. If she's clearly so much more impressive, why all the Todd signs on lawns all over my Ward 4 neighborhood? I don't know if these are all die-hard Todd supporters, or if he just campaigns hard here and (mostly elderly or longtime) residents allow him to place signs on their lawns.

He does seem to have more support among longtime residents and George gets more backing from more recent arrivals -- both get to vote just the same, so it will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Todd only cares about Shepherd Park. He gives exactly 0 effs about Takoma (witness Eastern Avenue shitshow), Petworth, Lamond-Riggs, etc.

Todd also had a history of sticking his signs where they don't belong (owner didn't all for it).

The only time I saw a similar complaint against Janeese on our neighbor list was when the wife didn't realize the husband had asked for the sign.

Todd (actually, DPW, run by his buddy the Mayor) also got caught taking down Janeese signs.

They are just signs, but I think it sums up Brandon Todd pretty well.

Yard signs don't vote.

I am sick of Todd. He governs with platitudes; he's no substance, just a puppet for Bowser. If you engage him in a policy discussion, he dismisses you -- that is, unless you're a developer.

I would vote for a wet towel over Todd, but I'm actually really energized over Janeese.

And the last few weeks have really underscored the importance of this election. We need someone who is willing to take serious action to address what's happening in Ward 4. Seemingly every other day there's another shooting in Petworth, and all Todd does is send an email about how "angry" he is. Nothing changes.

We need real change. We need someone who will represent constituents, not developers. We need someone who will protect us, not the mayor. I dropped off my absentee ballot for Janeese yesterday.

Todd's a steady Eddie who doesn't get much press but gets things done.

George is a Democratic Socialist who will try to push DC even further left.

George is a wasted vote.

It is not a wasted vote because she has a very real chance to win. Whether that would be a good or bad thing is obviously debatable and an entirely different issue.

Essentially you’re advocating voting for a candidate, Janeese George, because she has a chance to win? Not because she’d be more competent?

Oh Lordy.

AOC has been pretty damn effective in Congress. One of the few competent lawmakers who exercises the oversight powers to effectively learn new info
and demand answers.

If that’s what George offers, sign me up. We need some real accountability here in DC.

Oh, this is not true at all - he gives equal attention to the Ward 4 part Chevy Chase and especially loves to shake hands and give out pencils at Lafayette. He is very good at showing up to events, giving out pencils, and shaking hands.

He likes rich white people and Gold Coast types- he gives less than zero effs about the rest of the ward.

In addition to taking down Janeese's signs, Todd's campaign has been putting lawn signs on property of people who do not request it. Sleazy tactics abound. Please read article in City Paper about Democrats for Educational Reform, the pro-charter school organization that has been sending out mail flyers using scare tactics by misquoting Janeese. They quoted her as saying that policing is "one of the greatest dangers to the future of urban life" when she was specifically talking about the increasing MILITARIZATION of police forces. The full quote is “The transformation of American police departments, especially the MPD, into military units trained to occupy the very communities promised protection is one of the greatest dangers to the future of urban life.”

Yep, he comes to my neighborhood, the rich side of Ward 4 and does that all the time. Lots of people eat it up. I hate it and find he has no integrity, as well as being completely incompetent.
