You win! Do you feel better?

| It's a hard program. Many people are intimidated and majority do not get in. |

A more interesting thread would be how many Asian kids trudge off to TJ because it’s what their parents - not them - want.
It’s sad to think about kids who would have enjoyed a normal experience ending up in an intense, racially and economically segregated school just because they felt they had no choice. |
What? It's a STEM school. By definition its emphasis has to be on STEM. That's its mission. Some criticisms are undoubtedly valid but this is not one of them.
|
Why not? |
There are also lots of non-Asians who have no interest in going. They just don't think it's work it. |
Does that make you feel powerful to say that..like, you could go to TJ if you wanted to, but you just don't want to, so you have the upper hand? I guess it saves you from trying and from potential rejection. In the end, you do you, but don't make a good thing out to be not unworthy just because of your prejudices. |
Typo...strike "not" |
TJ should be shutdown. it is a waste of resources on a small group |
not pp but i am also a tj alum who does not want my kids to go to tj. if they really love math and sci...the school and their classmates will make it very hard to enjoy studying those topics. because tj is all about the grades and the cheating. would rather my kids go to annandale hs and take half day classes at nvcc or gmu if they want the intellectual challenge. TJ is a myth: that by going there you will be oh so successful. but in reality, the kids who go on to great things would have done them anyway. they didn’t need tj. if your child didn’t get in to tj, count your blessings—truly! |
I didn't say TJ is unworthy. Some people just don't think it's worth it. No prejudice, just different preferences. |
+1 |
mmm.. not gonna happen. It's the #1 school in the country. Which idiot school board would propose shutting it down and which idiot governor would shut it down?!?! Maybe you would but you are not on the school board nor the governor, so there's that.. And while the "let's shut down TJ proposal" is being discussed and being worked on, do you think those that DO NOT want it shut down will be sitting on their thumbs? They are smarter and more powerful than you. so... there's that too.. |
fairfax county gets bluer and more progressive every year. NYC almost got the magnets shut down last year. TJ will be shut down at some point unless more blacks and hispanics go there of course we tried this over 10 years ago and the remedial class spike ended that quick but it will be back the progressives won't stop until everyone is equal..... equally below average |
OP suggested people don't want to go to TJ because there are too many Asians. PP may have just been saying kids have other reasons for preferring to remain at their base schools. There are advantages to attending schools that are closer to home; that may have better sports and other extra-curricular activities (or at least don't require the same sacrifices to enjoy them); and that aren't so STEM-focused. PP said nothing to suggest those who have no interest in attending TJ would necessarily get in if only they applied. Just like many colleges, a secondary school with an admission rate under 20% is always going to be a bit of a crap shoot. It's sad when TJ people react as if everyone must secretly want to go there. These people treat it as a personal insult if their achievements (or, more often, those of their children) aren't constantly praised. |
