Admitted to UMD Honors, but no B-K. Yes, I was expecting it for no reason other than me foolishly thinking how can it look any better?

Deferred from Yale EA, Michigan, Virginia. Ivy day and the rest of March looks very bleak. I can't help but to think the recommendations were weak or that college counselor approved weak essays. It's a crapshoot, it's random---until it's your child then it feels very personal and very lonely.

This is pretty much my kid. Are you in a top MOCO school? GC told us only legacies and URM got in.

GC is wrong. That is totally not true. Next door neighbor got into Yale. Not a legacy, or any of the other things just a great smart kid from an MCPS high school.

Which one? The previous poster said top MCPS schools.

It's a UMD thing, equivalent to UVA's Jefferson Scholars.

Sorry, dear, it's not equivalent to the Jefferson. There are far more B-K awards than the Jefferson, they're not all full tution, and it's not nearly as prestigious.

What a dumbs$$ thing to say. UVa folks never disappoint...

Except that it's true. The Jefferson is far more selective.

"more selective" just means UVa is not as generous with merit scholarships. i am not sure why that's a good thing.

+1,000,000

If the choice is between more merit aid and offering better financial aid, I'm not sure merit is a good thing. Merit aid largely feeds schools bidding against each other for students who in many cases can already afford college. Jefferson at UVA is run by an affiliated foundation, not by the university.

UVa is not known for generous FA either. As you said even Jeff is not by the Uni.

The article claims that UVA is very affordable for Virginians. Perhaps the previous poster meant that UVA is not known for being generous with FA to out-of-staters, which I agree with after running the Net Price Calculator and comparing to many others. Hence my Maryland senior is not applying.

How did BK turn into a discussion about UVA financial aid? UVA boosters just can't help themselves...have to infiltrate every thread they can.

But UVA is need blind in admissions.

I expect that a strong college from your list will take your child in RD or possibly off the waiting list. I see this over and over with friends. EA/ED is nearly exclusively a legacy / athlete / URM vehicle. Your kid will be picked up in the RD round or off the waiting list. Don't lose hope!

Agreed. I understand its stressful when peers have EA acceptances, but something really good will probably shake in RD.
