Murch vs Lafayette vs Janney

Anonymous
One reason why Janney is great is that the school is very identified with its nearby community and vice versa. This creates an incredibly supportive, nurturing atmosphere for our Northwest “village” public school.

Agree with above poster, OP.
Ignore the bs of some of these posters.

All these schools are good, as are e.g. Woodacres and Sommerset in MD.
It depends how old your kids are and what exactly you are looking for.

We did PK-4 at Eaton, it was fine.
We have been at Horace Mann since K. The school is very good, 2 teachers in each class all the way till 5th grade. Makes a huge difference. School is small, about 350-400 kids, which is nice for smaller kids. So, have a look at Mann too.

People seem to love Stoddert as well. Janney is huge, 700 or so kids.
If possible, try and tour the schools, before deciding and listen to your gut feelings.

Also, consider the Middle School/ High Schools the E.S. feeds into. e.g. Mann feeds into Hardy, which though is now better, but I am planning on moving to MD for middle/high schools.

That’s one teacher per classroom plus an aide. Not two co-teachers.

Happy to correct this misinformation every time it comes up.

Therein tells you everything you need to know about the Janney community.

A friend whose kids went to Murch told me that this year, the Lafayette kids are the "popular" (i.e. mean) kids.

That popularity seems to be such a big thing at Deal leads me to believe that Hardy is the place to be.

It is middle school, if you can find me a middle school without girls struggling with navigating the whole sorting themselves into "friend groups" and having upsa nd downs along the way, please let emknwo where that is. I head about social issues from my friends with kids in NOVA and MD too. it is middle school. It is a hard time socially for kids.

I suspect, but do not have a kid there, that middle school girls at Hardy struggle with these same issues and "popularity" is a thing there too. If it does not, please someone weigh in and let us know.

Yes, that is what I meant. And I believe only Mann has this all the way till 5th grade; not sure, maybe Janney too, I am not sure.

Same could be said about Lafayette

And Stoddert, but nobody does it like Janney - "The best and the rest".

Very few go to private schools after Janney. Maybe one handful. Everyone goes happily to Deal.

That's not true after Deal though. Many Janney kids go on to private high schools. Almost all Murch kids go to Wilson or Walls. Not sure about Lafayette, but I think most go to Wilson/Walls.

Utterly the dumbest, most uniformed thing I've read on here in a long time.

Janney has 1 aide in every PK and K classroom per DCPS. They also have 2 partner teachers in 1st grade who split between the 5 classes, and a dedicated co teacher. 2nd grade as of this year has 2 partner teachers among the 5 classes and 1 co teacher. 3rd grade has 1 partner, 1 co, 4th and 5th 1 co each. Pretty sure that is accurate, but all this info is given on the school tour.

I actually have two Janney grads in high school (one public/one private). The overwhelming majority of Janney kids continue on to Wilson/Walls after Deal. Lots of crazy on this thread.

Maryland can have you. I'm surprised you aren't looking at privates, you certainly seem to fit the profile!

At least the PP is honest, rather than pretending that Hardy is on par with Deal, etc. It's not yet, which is why DCPS has actually had to force feeder schools out of Deal to go to Hardy.
