It sounds to me like GBRS does play a big role unless you have excellent scores to override it.

Agree. Looking at last year's thread, there were many that got in with high GBRS but average to low Cogat & Nnat scores.

I suppose it's because GBRS are observations made by the teachers and AART viewed over long period of time. Whereas the Cogat & Nnat are tests given at a point in time. It's unknown how many prep for tests. I heard that in general, Nnat is easier to prep for than Cogat. Hence the very large disparity in the scores in some. But I think the GBRS and report cards tend provide additional aspect of child's capabilities.

A stupid question here - what’s the difference between an AAP curriculum and a non AAP one?

We received a letter on Friday. My son got accepted and will be attending Bull Run next year.

Other than math, the curriculum is identical. For math, it is advanced which means that the 3rd-5th grade math curriculum is taught in 3rd and 4th grade. For schools with advanced math, the classes can be for students who are advanced in math, not just AAP students.

The curriculum is not the same. They go more in depth in all subjects and have more project based learning. Students also have a little more freedom to do self directed work.

I had seen a write up on the curriculum specifics but can't find it now. I will post if I find it.

DP. It sounds like a good school. It also sounds like PP's DC won't be happy in AAP either.

Still a better fit than general ed or a private school though. And the AAP teachers can provide extensions with the math.

Absolutely ridiculous! You should appeal, since pretty much all of the kids in your child's current math and reading groups will get in.

Agree. Do you have any idea why your child wouldn't be accepted? Did you test prep?

Cogat score is below cut-off however appeal should get your DC in AAP. What is your DC GBRS?

Unfortunately COGAT is 1 point below the cutoff of 132. GBRS is 11.

Samples, GBRS commentary, Parent comments may also have an impact that we do not see here. For some kids, especially one's on the cusp, this input may tell a larger story than scores. This is the case for my DS and the reason I decided to parent refer despite lowish scores. Fortunate for some and unfortunate for others there is no line in the sand for this process.

Contact your AART and ask for a copy of the packet, which will include the GBRS. Mine sent it home with DC the next day.
Not too late to appeal. If you want to appeal with a WISC, contact GMU or a private provider.

I'm surprised that you're not in. COGAT score is great.

This makes me feel sick. Looking at the "in" scores so far, I thought COGAT 132+ would get you in. Is there any consistency in this process?

I would definitely appeal that. Ask your AART for the file ASAP before he/she gets flooded. Get a WISC or other IQ test. I have a third grader too and am nervous, especially based on your result. For my DC, Cogat was 130 and NNAT was 123 (from GMU). I saw the file the school submitted, and the GBRS was 13, with strong work samples from the school (in my opinion). I hope this puts DC through. Otherwise, I will likely appeal too.

Guessing they have different expectation for a 3rd grader.
