2018 AAP Admission Thread

Ineligible letter received Friday
NNAT 116
COGAT 125

Getting file today to see GBRS. I know scores are a little low but I expected high GBRS and he is in top reading and math and bored in school currently so I thought a holistic review might get him in. He is among the youngest of second graders but I don’t think they consider that.
May or may not do WISC to appeal. I think he’d be much happier in AAP but not sure our center (Bull Run) is necessarily the end-all be-all.

The test scores are age-normed, so age is taken into account.

Are you planning to attend the orientation? We’ll be there.

Got reject letter

Cogat 142
NNAT 114
GBRS: Dont know

Does it make sense to re appeal? Or try giving Wisc or its too late now?

I would definitely appeal that. Ask your AART for the file ASAP before he/she gets flooded. Get a WISC or other IQ test. I have a third grader too and am nervous, especially based on your result. For my DC, Cogat was 130 and NNAT was 123 (from GMU). I saw the file the school submitted, and the GBRS was 13, with strong work samples from the school (in my opinion). I hope this puts DC through. Otherwise, I will likely appeal too.

What would be considered strong work samples?

I am comparing to the file prepared for my DC last year. Last year, the work samples were hard to read, and the main sample selected was kind of random stream of consciousness writing. In the file for this year, I saw writing samples that clearly showed my DC's wit and knack for storytelling, extensive vocabulary, and just overall creativity and thought process. Additionally, the write up on the GBRS clearly tied into those samples. Of course, I have not reviewed anyone else's files, so I don't know how this compares to other third graders or what the committee is looking for specifically. All I can say is that the file this year was much better than last year, and while age might factor into some of that, I don't think the improvement in quality can be attributed solely to DC being a year older.

The CogAT is age-normed... but my school did not include the actual test results with the packet... only the composite and breakdown scores. Those, I don't believe, are "age normed". Only if you look at the full test sheet do you see the breakdown by age. So, my very young 7 year old got a 130 composite score (not in pool), but was in the 93rd-97th percentiles (on age) in each subcategory.

If he doesn't get in, I will include the full test score report with my appeal... I'm not sure if the committee saw it or not... it certainly wasn't included in my copy of the file.

How do you get the GBRS? I called my DS school this morning and left a message to the registrar. Will she call me back? or will I get it in the mail / with the child?

Picked by the file his GBRS is 12. I noticed that the form where the Cogat scores are filled had scores from last year, is this normal?

Contact your AART and ask for a copy of the packet, which will include the GBRS. Mine sent it home with DC the next day.
Not too late to appeal. If you want to appeal with a WISC, contact GMU or a private provider.
