New middle school enriched and accelerated classes

Anonymous
Actually, DC’s Pyle online registration was updated with the new classes when I checked on Tuesday so no need to call Nardii.

No i meant the families whose kids weren’t picked for the class will be calling to petition to override the decision!

LOL. Yes, you’re right.

Out of curiosity, is anyone planning to ask for entry into those accelerated classes if your child wasn't selected? Is there a process for that?

Was the letter from your school or the AEI office?

It was from the Middle School principal, but I was told the list of students was supplied by the AEI office and the middle school had no input.

I don't see how because there doesn't seem to be a process in place and like many issues with MCPS, no transparency. If the poster at Pyle is correct, AEI made the decision who gets to take the classes to facilitate MS principals ability to wipe their hands of the process and thus avoid parents petitioning at the MS level.

I heard that at some schools the classes are full and they won't be able to add or aren't willing to add additional sections.

Well you can still discuss with your principal and ask him or her to advocate for your child
If they agree.

What I was told is that you believe if AEI made an error, you can contact them. They have 5 objective criteria for each class.

They’re trying to make sure principals aren’t inundated, but that doesn’t mean they can’t advocate for their students if they need an additional section—now is the time to train an additional teacher—too late later...

Thanks for this info. Do you mind expanding on it? Who told you (AEI, principal?) and were you told any of the criteria?

NP: I am curious too about the criteria. I imagine there is a floor or baseline to be considered. However, I wonder if it is the same for each middle school given that some schools have more 99 type kids vs 90+ type kids after the top performers were admitted to the magnets. That is why I think the original announcement mentions "student enrollment" and scheduling as factors in the decision. Some schools may have 2 sections of a course, others 1.

It can't possibly be the same baseline for the enriched classes as the admissions baseline for the magnet differs so widely by school and "peer group" is a factor.
