I think the fact that they can consider paying OOS or private tuition in general puts them above middle class. Just saying. |
No, she said $46,634 which is the UVA OOS rate - still a much better deal than LAC, SLACS and other institutions now at $72K a year. OP - go with UVA - your child will have a much better chance at elite grad programs from there, plus UVA has its own great law school, Darden School, etc. My DD is going thru the graduate application process now. Her professors have been amazingly accessible and helpful with letters of recommendation. We also have many relatives who went to Univ. of Miami. We would never even consider it for DD, who was a top student. Go read comments on Collegeconfidential. |
PP you are ignoring the cost of room and board. The UVA out of state cost of attendance is currently $63,000. https://sfs.virginia.edu/cost/17-18 |
It’s good to see that the high schoolers found this thread. Because their comments are so totally THE. BEST. EVER. O.M.G. |
I get the sense you are VERY unfamiliar with higher education in general. |
Hardly. Come on, everyone knows Miami is a party school! https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/top-party-schools/ |
You're right. I had the fees for only tuition. Did not include room and board. |
| I would pick Uva over the other 2 even at full freight!! No brainer. |
It it. But again, if you think a student won’t get into a good grad school because they went to UMiami, you know absolutely nothing about higher education. |
LOL!!!! So Miami at #19...oh no that party school is going to stop you from getting into a good grad school! But UVA at 25 is totally OK! |
But thanks for posting a who cares ranking that list MIAMI UNIVERSITY as a top party school. |
|
Note to self: Miami Umiversiry, the public college in Ohio, was once ranked a top 3 party school by an unknown entity.

| U Miami is fantastic, if your kid is focused and not there for greek life. DC got a huge merit scholarship, chose the U over top state schools in CA. Every national scholar opportunity one competes for in big-ticket name schools is open to the U Miami top tier kids, with way less competition. The private aspect means small classes always available to them, graduating in 4 years or less is guaranteed if you want to. Switching majors, no problem. President Julio Frenk, from Harvard, has been recruiting some of the best talent to lead their departments.U Miami is more diverse and attracts top students from the South American/Latin American region than most schools. Bonus: Coral Gables is beautiful, the campus is amazing, and the beach is a $15 uber ride away. |
| Better to be the big fish in the small pond. |
Agree. My daughter did this and was researching with the top professor in her major by sophomore year and was published by junior year. Others moved to many top notch graduates programs and a few with full rides. Hoping the same will happen to her. Save the money, make your mark with top leadership positions, and get fantastic grades. |
