Again are we really surprised

SES correlated directly to this

Asians > Whites > huge gap > Hispanics > Blacks

Been this way for years and no amount of social engineering is going to change it. It's called reallity

Is this what it has come to? Anonymously adding up the number of black kids to prove/disprove that not ALL black kids are dumb? This is kind of sick.

This is DCUM. It shouldn't surprise you. Unfortunately.

There were 122 black 4th graders who scored 5 on last year's PARCC. DD was one of them. She is not in compacted math. None of the white students in her grade at her school who are in compacted math scored 5 on the PARCC math. Does that say something about the selection process? Does it say something about the quality of instruction in compacted math?
No one is saying to allow underachieving black and latino kids into accelerated programs. But there are high achieving black and latino students who are not being included.

If a black/hispanic kid scored really high on the HGC entrance exam, I highly doubt that this student wouldn't be admitted. BTW, there are Black kids in my DC's HGC group. So, yes, I know there are those who score high enough to get in. If you think there's some racial bias by teachers, then we should get rid of teacher recommendation, and go strictly by test scores.

Why do you doubt this?

And what about PP's point that there are high achieving black and Latino students who are not being included? Everybody on DCUM keeps saying OMG the only way to admit more black and Latino students is to water down the program because (choose one)

1. black and Latino students are not high-achieving
2. all of the high-achieving black and Latino students are already in the HGC

But neither is true.

If there are high achieving black and latinos who could compete and get admission into the magnet programs, but are not in the program because of lack of information or because of lack of space in the program, then I can assure you for each of such AA/HI student, there are tens of White/Asian students who are being excluded. I think a bigger injustice is being done to these Asian/White students - because MCPS wants to play the race card and the numbers game. A brain is a terrible thing to waste.

You just said that it's a bigger injustice when a qualified Asian or white student does not get to participate in the HGC than when a qualified black or Latino student does not get to participate in the HGC.

That's appalling.

No, PP was saying it was worse for Asian/White students because many more qualified students are getting left out. 100 students left out is worse than 1 student bring left out (the previous numbers were used to illustrate a point; please don't take them literally). That's all.

No it's 122 black kids. Add up the number of black kids who scored 1 thru 4, and subtract that number from the total number of black kids tested. We are talking 4th grade math here,

I don't need to look into the report card to know that's impossible. And you certainly didn't learn your math well. Maybe you should let your daughter do the math for you.

Since the magnet programs are so great, and the black/latinos are so unfairly excluded for so long, how about from now on these programs only recruit the top black/latino students to make up. The white and asian will do just fine at their home school.

It's 22 not 122. 122 is slightly more than 5% of 2407 (the number of black 4th graders who took the test) so it wouldn't be blacked out.
Numbers are:
2407
-398
-886
-667
-434

22

that pp is a troll based on the fact that he/she not only knows daughter's grade but the grades of all the white kids' in the school's compact math group. And her daughter is not even in that group.

Nope, they're not. In almost all tests out there Hispanics slightly out score Blacks. Might not always be the case in MoCo because we get a lot of kids of poor non-English speaking immigrants, but in general this pattern holds for most things like IQ, SAT scores, crime rates, house hold income, school suspension rates etc. It's frankly amazing how consistent this pattern is. Hell, it even holds for STD rates.

"Hispanic/Latino" is not a race. There are black people who are Hispanic/Latino. There are Hispanic/Latino people who are black.

I wish I had a nickel for every time I've typed that out on DCUM.

While I agree with you 100%, its irrelevant here because MCPS makes you effectively choose. There are intricacies of the Hispanic group, biracial group, etc. that aren't even being looked at here. AND labeling is part of the problem.

This is correct. For the purposes of MCPS demographics everyone is pigeon holed. How consistently this is done is a separate issue, but no one is counted in more than one category. When DCUM uses these terms it's usually in reference to MCPS data.

And you know perfectly well that the vast majority of Hispanics in the US are of mixed Spanish and indigenous backgrounds. Shoot, 65% are from Mexico. While there are some black people who are Hispanic, the group as a whole is overwhelmingly Spanish/indigenous.
