Why is DC fashion so boring?

Good morning everyone! I am 39 and I think I really want to become a Health Goth. How do I get started? I already have normcore under control today (yoga pants, sweatshirt, Norwegian hand-knit wool socks.)

LOL at this thread! I don't think it's real, but it is entertaining.

So I don't have time to read it all. Is it mainly that OP has green hair and thinks everyone is staring at her?

It's true and ugly people too.

I am also Health Goth. I am sad and sporty! This totally legitimizes wearing my black yoga pants everywhere. This morning I had them on with boots after yoga class (it's cold) and my hair is still kind of chlorine-damaged from indoor swimming. A bit green. The looks I got! People were shocked I tell you. It makes me feel a little sad but still sporty.

I just cannot fathom that you are walking around and people are just astounded by your green hair. I just cannot for the life of me believe that. Even in my small, rural home town kids colored their hair. If anything I can see people in DC being completely ambivalent to it. I agree there are a lot of people here that are status quo. But you are acting like green hair is something so unheard of that people are fainting in the street. They just aren't. This isn't happening. They also do not mistake you for a terrorist. I would never think that a terrorist would be into dying their hair green. The Taliban just doesn't seem to get into that kind of stuff. DC people know this. I think you are horribly insecure. I think you are possibly a bit self-involved to think everyone cares that much about your hair. And I'm also curious how old you are. When I was young I also thought a lot of what people thought of me. When I got older I realized how little they did think about me. People aren't that worried about what you are doing!!

So true! I see a lot of people with pastel, hot pink, purple hair. One of my coworkers has green and purple in her hair and it looks really cool! No one is judging her. When I see people with different color hair, it doesn't phase me at all. I don't care. I would never do it myself, because that is not my style. It sounds like you may not be as "hip" as you think you are. If you were, you would not feel so insecure.

This is Health Goth.

Ya. I stand by my description - Divergent Dauntless wardrobe with the addition of brand logos (Purell, really? Oh, that's the "health" part!).

OP, your tone and attitude match that of the woman who posted about not wanting to tell her baby's father about his baby, are you the same person? You have a complete inability to listen to ideas that do not parrot your own.

Lol. No thats not me.

Well you two sound very similar in personality. Look at that thread and tell us what you think.

I will look at it. It sounds entertaining. Which board is it under?

Relationships I think.

Lol. I am the same age as OP (26), and in college I had fire-engine red hair for a while. When I'm in non-professional social settings, I tend to dress like a grungy hipster. No one cares about your green hair. If you are super concerned, live in a hipper, younger neighborhood and I'm sure you will find others who are dressed less boringly. However, certain jobs (like law or policy) generally involve a more conservative professional look.

Even in Portland or Austin, there are people with boring jobs who dress conservatively (especially Austin where there are plenty of Texas government types and corporate oil types). It's a matter of finding the neighborhood and social circle that works for you. And caring less WTF everyone else thinks.

Thats what I'm thinking. I grew up here and moved back after college but realizing now I just can't do it. I am in a creative industry and love to wear avante garde fashion, but I feel like half the time I wear what I think is cool and fresh, I get stared at on the street like I'm some kind of freak. And I'm wearing clothes that would fit in perfectly and be considered normal in LA and NYC. It's really frustrating. I just dont get it.

I think you should move.

I am trying to. In the meantime, it's annoying.

Did one person on the Metro give you the stink-eye? Was she 80? I find it hard to believe anyone really cares that much. What are you wearing. A dress made of safety pins?

I'm not trying to go into a lot of detail but there's a style called "health goth" right now (that I'm guessing many of you dont know about). And not just one look. many. And like I said, these are styles that are totally accepted in nyc or la. Here people look at you like youve committed a felony. And I am a very attractive, clean looking young woman.

Oh man, the fact that you called health goth a style means you don't really get it at all. Jesus.

No, it's not. Read up if you're confused as to what it is.

My goodness. I shudder to think what you're read would be of norm core.... what a weird, out-of-touch assessment...

Ha ha, norm core is also a marketing/sociology experiment, and also makes you look butch. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Sweetie, I believe you look good, and I don't disagree that DC looks fucking boring and awful. A very good fashion-forward friend of mine was driven to despair by DC fashion (he called is "khakitown" and left for NYC). But PLEASE, don't fall for these made up trends like norm core and health goth. Really.

Please do! My husband works in marketing, so this tween is exactly who keeps him in a job. Follow the light...another trend to follow shortly.

I had green hair back in the 80s, if I saw you I probably looked at you and said "oh, look at that dumb ass kid with the fried green hair"
Anonymous
I bet OP is attractive but her problem is clearly a lack of confidence. You have to own that green hair and to hell with everyone. Stop obsessing about what others think.
