Why is DC fashion so boring?

The problem is, every other suburban mom in my office now wears it thinking she's "edgy." Unfortunately, it's last year's look in places that actually care about these things, like last year's Chanel adverts and among NYC women.

Thank you.

This says more about you. Nobody thinks wearing black is edgy. Its another shade, amongst many, to choose from.

Op, I totally feel your pain. I have wanted blue or purple hair for years and also want to shave one side off, but alas, I have to think about my mortgage and student loans. I'm an analyst for the feds and although I definitely tow the "corporate" line with the way I dress (nothing over the top, but definitely left of what is considered biz casual), I don't push it...my manager and counterparts would absolutely freak if I showed up for meetings with a half a head of purple hair. If I felt that I would continue on an upward trajectory in my agency with purple hair and dressing creatively, I would do it. But I know that this is a conservative town and I would be frowned upon, so I save the colored hair and extreme Avant Garde vacations and long weekends.

Yes, as someone who has lived in several major cities which allows me to compare it fairly, DC is very very conservative in terms of dress, and in terms of women stepping even one inch outside of what is expected, mostly from women. Go figure. Even younger women toe the line. Not everyone works as a lawyer or in a boring government job. For a city with many wonderful museums, it surprises me how frightfully dull it is.

I think people in DC gear towards the classic preppy look. Its what all the "cool kids" are doing. So everyone attempts to conform.

Classic preppy? Are you kidding me?! I wish. Most days I can’t distinguish the homeless from the employed as I stroll through downtown. It’s that bad!

I think people in DC think they are classic and preppy but they aren’t it’s all a lot of blah

Lots of law jobs, lots of political jobs, and lots of government jobs. All of them are going to push towards a more conservative dress code and away from a more fabulous fashionable look.

I just want to unlearn about all of this nonsense: normcore and health punk? ugh, its gross. please give me back the minutes of my life. I thought for a second this thread was funny enough to read through, but now I am left with a sickly feeling that any time I see someone with health goth or tinged hair that I will vomit in my mouth a little.

PS my pedicurist has pale lavender hair, he is a super trendy Korean guy, and I think it's all adorable on him.
