SELA! Hebrew immersion charter

Anonymous
I applaud Sela for including Arabic at older grades. Having learned Hebrew, Arablc will be easier for them. I was skeptical about their model, but I went to the expo armed with a lot of questions. While, I wouldn't use the word "mobbed," I did wait in line for several minutes to speak with their ED - they were indeed busy - and I got all of my questions answered - and he invited me to call him personally with any additional questions. They do seem like an organized, friendly group of people who are committed to academic rigor.

I am interested to see if the demographics of Sela even closely resemble DC's demographics is all. Just a thought.

I suspect that they will reflect DC in terms of cultural background, but as all of the DCUM bullies have continually pointed out when throwing mud at some of the higher performing charters, their is likely self-selection in terms of not sending SN kids to immersion, and lower SES not choosing to send their kids to school in upper Northwest and/or immersion settings. I can tell you that more than few Appleseed parents are applying to Sela (along with other charters) - and the ones that I know are middle class/professional AAs.

Sela won't be in "upper northwest"--it'll be in a mddle-class, predominently AA neighborhood in NE, albeit west of the river.

There is some self selection in not sending SN kids into immersion but most schools have main entry at prek3 and prek4, so many kids are not diagnosed until they are already in the immersion school. I can tell you that there are SN kids with IEPs at every immersion school in DC. The self selection for immersion schools occur more for ESOL so these resources usually end up being used for the SN kids at least at the immersion charter my SN kid attends.

Isn't it close to Takoma park, on the northeast side of north capital street?

It's in Takoma, DC - like a block from NW and on the border with Takoma Park, MD....and about 5 minutes from SS. So, depending on where you sit....that's pretty much upper NW. However, it's very close to Brookland, Fort Totten, etc., so it's pretty accessible for being so close to Maryland. I think it's pretty cool that they got a long-term home off the bat. It bears noting, however, that upper NW itself is fully of high SES African Americans along the "Gold Coast" of 16th, for example.

Huh--I always thought "upper NW" was code for upper Ward 3 (and the WOP neighborhoods of Ward 4).

I think of upper NW as being most neighborhoods approaching MoCo, so Crestwood, Shepherd Park, Takoma, Chevy Chase, DC, AU Park, etc.

Well, from where I stand:

The "exaggerated claims" are:

the cabal of boosters of you conjure up(who can't exist because there is no school):

1. Think Sela will be a good school (The nerve!)
2. Believe that they found a good location (must be crazy!)
3. Hope to be part of DCI (how dare they!)
4. Believe the school will be diverse (which can be true because your snowflake won't be attending)
5. Think teaching Hebrew is a fine idea (crazy, because your snowflake won't be studying Hebrew)

I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, until I actually looked for evidence of "fabrications and exaggerated claims" and they simply don't exist. So, while I am loathe to conjure up my own conspiracy theories (aka your cabal of boosters canard), I think there is some wacky anti-charter or anti-Sela, or anti-Jewish element at play here and it's very sad. I take it very personally when people opine on what the children of DC want or need, since this usually a cloaked referenced to black children, and we have a multi-racial home. I welcome Sela and any other bilingual opportunity for my children.

This is a very serious allegation, PP. Please point out exactly where anyone posted something so obviously "cloaked" as a racist reference to black children. Quickly.

>>> My DD is being immersed in Spanish, which I guess will soon put her in the majority as non-Spanish speakers will soon be the minority in this country

In Singapore, they have this saying: XXXX-speakers own the bus; YYYY-speakers drive the bus; ZZZZ-speakers wash the bus.

The ones who wash the bus revel in their status as the numerical majority. Have street fairs and fiestas. It's so socially progressive and everyone sits around the campfire and sings Kumbaya. You'd love it.

You're doing a fabulous job of preparing your daughter to work as a labor foreman in a banana plantation. That's your choice and this is a free country. Other parents choose to en-fluent their kids in languages of the folks who own the plantations and of the folks who decide if the plantations will get bank-financing and crop insurance or not. That is their choice, and this is a free country. That latter group of kids won't grow up with the Aztec--ean joy that your daughter will..... they'll be too busy deciding what your daughter's salary is gonna be.

Yeah, following the advice of that poster (which is impossible to decipher beyond their anti Spanish absurdity) would be unwise even if you could determine what they are saying. DCUM seems to have people even more special than the regular special these days...

I notice this poster never returned to justify this serious allegation. Good riddance.

PP, I am afraid a banana has a bigger brain than you do.
