At least you've got a view!

Well I forgot to mention we are making some improvements pp. The giant hole in the roof is where the loft is going.

No, seriously... Is this a joke? Someone admits to liking this mishmash of architectural styles and having HALF your frontage be garage? Do you put your toilet in the living room, too? I mean, I know you have to have one (or three, or whatever) but WHY would you want to put it out front and center??? Painful.

no toilet in the living room but i do have one next to it in the powder room. I also have another one next to the mudroom. When I get old I don't have to worry about running to far if I have diarrhea.

Or do you prefer one of the sister homes

Where are you finding these? Both are equally bad IMO.

Plus, it looks impassable, um, I mean, very walkable!

Yes, because they're the exact same house, mirror image and different facing notwithstanding. You didn't notice?

NO NO NO, don't add anything to the roof or else it will become a mcmansion (as noted in the mcmansion article)

Oh, for shame! The tackiness, the tackiness! Where do you live? Have you not noticed that most lots are too small to put the garage anywhere other than the front? Yeah, it's less than preferable but I'd rather have a garage anyway.

So you get it! The lots are too small. Also, it's one thing to have to put up with ugliness for the sake of necessity ("need" a garage, admit that it sucks to have it represent half your frontage), it's another thing entirely to claim that you love that look. That's like saying "I think I look best when my $350 honey blond salon job grows out and shows at least two inches of salt and pepper."

Sorry, but I have to: LOOK AT THE SHUTTERS!!! I am literally, no joke, giggling madly looking at those shutters. Some poor soul went to architecture school, wept at the beauty of classical, mathematical design, marveled at the sheer balls of Wren and Wright and Pei, and then said "eh, it doesn't matter if we put the same size shutters on all the windows, even the one that is half the width of the others." Ok, now I'm not giggling anymore, I'm actually really sad for that guy.

You do realize the 90% of homes have aesthetic non functional shutters, this isn't 1880 anymore.

There is a weird obsession with these two particular houses on DCUM. First, there was a thread about them. Then, someone puts them up every time there is a discussion about big houses or mcmansions. I was the first person to note, hey, those look like two pretty nice, new houses, and I'm sticking with that sentiment.

So every house with a front-loading garage and cosmetic shutters is tacky, in your opinion? That's fine, I suppose, to each his own. I just think it's a nice house, I don't really understand what makes it less attractive than the little boxes in Arlington and Alexandria and elsewhere.

Me intention was to show a home that was large and not your typical "mcmansion" (which I hate the term). like the following

You meant fake, ugly, architecturally incorrect shutters. I guess 90% of homes got it wrong. That is why all (or almost all) homes in Georgetown have functional shutters -- to maintain architectural integrity

The fact that you say that fake shutters signal some sort of evolution or improvement ("not 1880 anyome") , and that having fake shutters is the same (or even superior) to having functional shutters, and that you didn't get PP's criticism about using the same shutter size for windows of different sizes, is sad. I really hate large garages out front. That may be my own weird and unique prejudice and I can admit it. Hey, I grew up in a house like that, and spent many happy hours practicing my tennis serve against those garage doors.

But the shutters.... I don't care that they're non-functional. I'm not creeping up to see if they actually have hinges on 'em. But if they're supposed to be "cosmetic", doesn't that imply "attractive"? Why this resistance to at least making them look like they could possibly fit the window to which they're attached?

You might have a thing against short women in skinny jeans. Or bald guys with combovers. Or poodles in show cut. I have a captial-T Thing against bad architecture. And just like you would go all wide-eyed and incredulous if the combover guy stated "No one can tell I'm bald!", I react that way when people say they "like" the looks of these sloppily designed houses.
