Please stop giving your suburban friends DC guest parking passes

The cop was very understanding and said that there have been a number of calls over his tenure about the same thing. They ticket and tow.

That was because the cop was thinking, "I will tell the crazy person anything to get off the phone."

OP, seriously, there is nothing in DC code of law which says you can only use the pass a certain number of days for a certain car. Please tell me what you think the cop would put on the ticket? Excessive parking?

Considering the new yearly passes just arrived I highly doubt the (very effective) city council will be taking the passes away from their constituents.

Exactly. This is why the OP is full of it. Parking enforcement doesn't work like that. If they see a guest pass they just keep walking.

Again you fail to see the point. The nanny working for someone in a residential neighborhood is ok. The person who parks on Albermarle and then takes the metro downtown is NOT OK. Jesus are you people that daft?

I wish I had a warning for that one, almost spit my coffee out. Are you really honestly that obtuse?

I hate people who use the word obtuse.

I know, it's so annoying when you have to look a word up.

And don't be surprised if you get caught. You'll never know who ratted you out so all your talk about retaliation is just talk.

Nice naming calling too. Very grown-up.

But if you're a nanny, it's A-OK!!!!!!

You guys are SUCH idiots. The whole point with the nannies is that an employer who lives in the city can give their nanny their permit so that they won't get ticketed. The OP is talking about people who give their friends who work in an office their permits so that they don't have to pay for a real parking spot. HUGE difference. The nanny thing is the whole point of having the visitor permit. The friend thing is abuse of that.

It says for "guests" not "employees." So if a resident of DC wants to host someone as their "guest" to park on their street, that's their choice. It doesn't say "to allow people who employ others to work in their home."
You are really such a douchebag.

OP, get to know the parking enforcement people who patrol your nabe. Point out the cars you think are misusing the visitor parking pass. If it looks like they are not a "guest" but are misusing the guest pass, they'll get a warning notice telling them they have to register their car in DC.

We live downtown and get this kind of misuse a lot. Everyone on our block knows which cars belongs to residents and DC lives to ticket. Win, win for all.

"Excessive parking"...high five PP!

OP is nuts.

Wait...I thought based on these boards that no one who lived in DC would deign to have a friend who lived in the suburbs (what with us suburbans being all busy at Applebees). So how can this really be a problem?

DC has several universities that attract non-DC residents. Some of these non-DC students live beyond commuter range. Should a student from Delaware, NJ, Mass etc not be allowed to park a car on the street if they are renting a house or apartment? Guess what? DC has a permit for them except for Georgetown!

Parking by students at Au law is up before the Council too. Point is, if DC has a permit for them and they got one, then they paid to park. If the driver of the car above is using a visitor pass they got from a resident in that zone so they would not have to obtain the proper permit from the city, then they did not pay the city to park. That person is lying and cheating every time they park there.

No one here has explained why they think it is ethical to park for free where you are supposed to pay to park. Just all over OP for pointing out that you are lying and cheating and you're cheap too. If you can't defend your actions at least have the balls to own them. Truth hurts.

Better to be an unethical liar with no balls?

Whine and name call all you want but see how you feel if someone with out of state plates parks in front of your house everyday.

OP, complain to parking enforcement. They'll appreciate the tip and will ticket them. They could care less about "no law saying you can park for set # of days.". Enforcement will leave it up to the car owner to contest the ticket if it's wrong. Their attitude is "pay up MD and VA" commuters. Use it to your advantage,

If you are calling 911 and/or deflating people's tires because you're mad about where they parked, you are in need of a padded room filled with chocolate, Valium, and Jesus.

You go first - please explain why it is "ethical" for the city to limit parking for students who go to school in affluent neighborhoods, when they live in the city, and have a valid parking permit.

<snort> This is my new favorite line. Well, second favorite, behing "Enjoy Applebee's." Fair warning, I'm stealing it. Often. I imagine I'll have ample opportunity to use it on DCUM.

DC, like most cities in the US, limits parking in high traffic areas by people who do not live in that area, regardless of whether they live in another area of the city and have a valid parking permit for that area or not and regardless of whether they are students or not. A student living in DC can get either a residential parking permit or a reciprocity permit for the parking zone where they live. If that permit is valid for the zone where they go to school, then they can park near school using that permit. If not, they can't. Why should students be treated any differently than anyone else? Also, AU law has its own parking policy which prohibits student without a valid residential parking permit for that zone from parking on the residential streets around the law school.

OK, you're turn. Explain why lying and cheating are ethical. Or at least own it.

BTW. While I wouldn't hesitate to point out parking permit scofflaws to a passing parking enforcement officer, I think vandalizing someone's property (affixing stickers, deflating tires) is unethical.

Ball is in your court. At least that's one you do have.
