I don't understand what you mean by rigged. An example from our private school on someone admitted to a non-HYP ivy.
Top 10% of class One of 5 students offered 2 APs as a Freshman, based on entrance exam (Bio & Geo) 11 Total APs 4s and 5s on all of them (Calc/Stats/Bio/Chem/Phys) 1450 SAT (recruited athlete, so stopped taking the test) 3.8UW (school is known as a harsh grading school) Top 10 nationally in their event at Track and Field. State Champion F&F. County Record Holder T&F School Rock Band Chess Club Beloved by Faculty, fellow students and the administration/College Guidance office. Also, 3rd Generation Legacy Is it rigged because this kid got in? Eventhough their SAT is below your kid's. A lot of legacy kids are like this. Another kid from school at HYP...similar stats. Double Legacy. Lacrosse all-state. Top Math student in HS. 1430 SAT; 4.0UW. Where does your kid compete with these kids? |
Single digit selective. Reality. She had no chance, or extremely little chance, to begin with. |
Get over it. You have tons more advantages in the last 18 years as a MC/UMC family than the poor kid has had. And there will always be someone who has more than you---unless your names is Bezos, musk, gates, etc. Life isn't fair. Fact is acceptance rates are single digits and most who apply are getting rejected. |
It is not that dire. My DD got into many single digit selective schools in the T15, unhooked. Picked an ivy. For the top top kids, even females, it can work out. Only OP knows if her D is indeed a top student at the school, or better yet THE top student(rigor and gpa, and top letters). |
Many?….first clue that this is fiction. |

There are countless studies showing the preference for top 1% families and legacies - kids with lower stats who gain access due to their family name or tax bracket. Until legacy and donor admits stop, expect the chorus of middle class families to get even more vocal. Simply because there are less privileged kids out there doesn’t mean Middle class and UMC families aren’t getting screwed in this rigged process. |
No one cares how vocal you get. |
A 1430 SAT student does not belong at HYP. Textbook example of a rigged system. |
Actually a lot of folks do. And this is why legacy admissions will be the enter to fall. Enjoy your unearned privilege while you can Buffy. |
Good luck with that. Won’t happen. |
Yup. That’s life. My Harvard Legacy kid didn’t get in because we hadn’t given seven digits. It is what it is. But she’s now at its law school, all on her own merit. |
They offer the school more than the OP's kid. This board is like a bunch of adults with arrested development. They don't know how the world works, and have an almost naive view of the world. |
| I think everyone would be surprised by the number of kids with 1400 SATS admitted to the HYPSs, even kids who are not hooked in any way but just overall extraordinary applicants. |
