I always thought it was a lot - even if you say all the athletes and FGLI kids are in that 25% (which I don't agree with. There are plenty of athletes and FGLI kids who have higher scores than the bottom 25%) |
| Totally agree with OP. Legacy has always been a thumb on the scale. Big money donation even more so. This has been true forever sadly. |
Most of the kids in the bottom 25 percent probably are in the 1480 to 1510 range. Much ado about nothing. Worth adding, however, that I know personally several recruited athletes that were very good students that were told they just needed SAT scores in the 1300 range for H/Y/P. They just took the test without tutoring to hit the minimum. If they were going through the regular process, they would have prepped and scored higher. If you want to complain about rigged, perhaps start with the schools that take close to half the class test optional. |

So? |
What would be the trajectory for this country? |
Well, I think we should recognize that the US is an oligarchy. And Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford perpetuate that with all their hooked students who did nothing but be born in the right family. But the good news is that the US has tons of great colleges. |
Jared Kushner was admitted to Harvard several decades ago. Certainly tells us little about college admissions today. |
Its so funny that you think this because its so fact free. The percent of the class that is legacies at H/Y/P/S is at an all time low. The percentage of kids who are receiving financial aid of some sort, and the percentage of kids receiving full rides are at all time highs. The preference for full pay kids is actually more pronounced, often significantly more pronounced, outside of the Ivies. |
| Moral Hazard. When majority of the people are indifferent. |
Being in the middle HHI range at a private school doesn't make you "middle class." |
Stop perpetuating this MYTH. Thinking this may somehow assuage some rejection - either your own or your kid's - but sadly it's not the reason. There are just too many qualified kids and too few spots. |
Exactly. Talk about an utter lack of self-awareness. |
School, especially the top ones, are more economically heterogeneous now than they ever have been. I feel like only an ignorant teenager with a chip on their shoulder wouldn't know this. Also, something about the word 'oligarch' screams APUSH to me. |
