+1. They are surprising number of murder suicides committed by men while going through a divorce. Maybe it's not surprising.

Maybe that should be a hold on a gun permit. If your spouse has filed for divorce there’s an X waiting period on your gun application.

Or, in this case, a tip line where you can request their gun be removed from their possession for 120 days.

My heart goes out to the children.

Sometimes we just don’t realize exactly what kids are dealing with at home. I’m really thinking of the kids, their whole world is gone.

So much this. These poor kids were living in a war zone. They are f**ked for life.

Trauma echoes for generations. I hope Justin rots in hell.

Virginia has a red flag law. The behavior he exhibited, as has been reported, was absolutely grounds for him to have had his weapon confiscated. But, it requires someone to make a request.

On July 1, 2020, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Emergency Substantial Risk Order (ESRO) law, commonly referred to as a “red flag law,” went into effect, making Virginia the 19th state to enact such legislation.

EQUESTING AN EMERGENCY SUBSTANTIAL RISK ORDER (ESRO)

Virginia’s ESRO law prevents individuals who show signs of being a threat to themselves or others from purchasing, possessing or transporting any kind of firearm. If you know of someone with a gun acting in a way that concerns you, speak up to prevent a gun tragedy:

To request an ESRO, call the Police non-emergency line at 703-691-2131.
If there is an immediate danger, call or text 9-1-1.

Virginia has a red-flag law: https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/19.2-152.13/
It became law in 2020, with the lieutenant governor's vote breaking the senate's tie to pass it.

You all are looking for the government to somehow stop dangerous domestic abuse and violence issues that the government is completely incapable of stopping.

"Four years ago, he bought a gun with money intended for his children's horseback riding lessons and then disappeared without a word. His brother and wife's stepfather found him in the woods of a public park, insisting that he needed the gun for protection and carried it with him so the children wouldn't find it. The standoff ended when his brother arranged for a mental health professional to talk to him in a parking lot at Tyson's Corner Mall at 1 in the morning."

Hopefully his gun was removed under the red flag law he helped pass. I don't know. I do know that he shouldn't have had a gun.

What is a gun permit? That does not exist in America. Or, at least not in most states, including Virginia.

They can certainly do a lot more than they currently do.

A critical gap.

For help leaving a potentially violent domestic situation: call 703-246-4573
Fairfax County Domestic Violence Action Center (DVAC)

They will review different options and explain what the Virginia laws actually are. There is a lot of mis-information posted as fact in this thread.

In *crisis* situations: 911 or
"If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please call our Domestic and Sexual Violence 24-Hour Hotline at 703-360-7273"

Ok, but it doesn't really help.

I disagree, a lot of women don’t know what their legal options are to leave these relationships, especially if there are children involved. There are also women who lack the financial means to leave. I’m not saying it is a totally perfect fix, but these hotlines are definitely needed.
