- it was a promise to future generations that our government would never again prioritize one race over another.

This bill (now a Maryland law) undermines the unifying purpose of the Civil Rights movement.

It's hard to be "unified" when a major group in the US is still feeling the lingering effects of systemic racism.

If you don't want to prioritize one race over another, then everyone should dump ALL of their wealth together and then split it evenly across everyone in the US. We can start over so that white people aren't continued to be prioritized over everyone else - we all start off equal.

You do realize the wealthiest racial group in the US isn't white, don't you?

Uhm what? Where did you come up with that tid bit?

Asian median wealth is significantly higher than white median wealth in the US. Did you not know this? Would you like me to share some references?

I'd love that. And who would be getting the reparations again? Is the Asians?

…and how many Asian people are there?

You suck at math.

How is that relevant? Are you suggesting cumulative wealth by racial group is somehow meaningful?

The median income of a group that is only 7% of the US population is irrelevant.

White people possess ~80% of the wealth (and power) in the US. If we redistributed wealth, it'd primarily be coming from white people.

Then perhaps the median income of a group that's only 13% of the population is also irrelevant. Where do you draw the line?

The discussion was who is primarily going to pay for reparations, not if the government is obligated to pay reparations.

I wonder what they will ultimately decide on doing. Maybe a special property tax assessment on anyone who indicated they are white on their mortgage or MD government forms? I guess MD could also add a surcharge to car registration or license renewal for white residents. Maybe put it up for a bond vote if everyone is willing to fund it?

It is a tool that helps build wealth moreso for those with lower incomes. Which means, disproportionately, African Americans. It is universal in structure so not explicitly tied to race, but will have a racially equitable impact by providing more wealth to lower income children.

Certainly worth exploring in this study.

I think this country has done enough. If you constantly look behind, you can't move forward.

When will we get reparations for the feral crime, wasted affirmative action $$, and dumbed down schools to accommodate?

What has the country done for Jim Crow laws and redlining? Redlining still affects home prices, school “scores”, etc today.

Giving everyone chance to succeed. I came here with 200$ in my pocket and nothing else. If I was able to make it, no reason why you couldn't. You can only blame history so much.

The government actively discriminated against people who are alive today and prevented them from generating wealth, obtaining a quality education, getting a job, etc.

What has the country done to address that?

I don't know PP. Individual accountability has to count for something. Government is preventing me from succeeding is a losing argument. YOU work hard, YOU get yourself educated, YOU make your own money, and YOU own your success. If you don't care, why should I?

What % of black people were able to take advantage of those things while they were available? What was the collective financial benefit?

What was the financial impact of the racist government policies?

Do these practices come anywhere close to covering the harm?

Irrelevant, racist comments.

The government caused significant harm. It should be held accountable.

To whom? Why do you feel you are entitled to get anything? And why do you think I (who had nothing to do with slavery) have to compensate you somehow?? Please provide thoughtful logical answer if you can.

To the community who was harmed.

You seem to be confused about the government as an entity. Let’s say a police officer illegally beat you during an arrest, the local government (the employer) would likely be forced to compensate you for harm/injuries you experienced. The government is an entity that can be held accountable for harm.

Does that make it any clearer for you?

A study could help identity specifically who was harmed, how much, and by whom.

But, it's been more than 150+ years since the slavery ended. Are you saying you are somehow still "harmed" and it prevents you from making yourself/your life better? White folks have done many bad things (today's standards) in history, are you saying the Govt has responsibility to "re-do" all the wrong things of the past? That is one f'ed up way to live.

Jim Crow, redlining, education and employment discrimination all happened within the last century.

Seems like you are really unfamiliar with the institutional racism that has existed in the US.
