Political Discussion
Congress and Biden at least tried to address some of these issues in a bipartisan immigration bill last year. Trump told Republicans to tank it, so they did. The bill would also end the practice of “catch and release.” If passed into law, the bill would allow migrants who come to the border through lawful ports of entry and families to enter the U.S. under federal supervision for 90 days while they complete asylum interviews. Those who pass would receive work permits as they await adjudication of their claims. Those who fail would be removed from the U.S. and repatriated to their home countries or to Mexico. The bill would mandate detaining migrants who try to enter the U.S. outside of official ports of entry, pending any asylum claims. Those who fail would also be removed. The bill allocates funding for repatriation flights up to 77 per day. The bill also raises the “credible fear” standard during interviews for asylum claims, largely by front-loading consideration of whether migrants have disqualifying criminal histories, whether they lived safely in third countries before trying to cross into the U.S. and whether they could safely relocate within their own countries. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/new-immigration-asylum-reform-bill-released-senate-text-rcna136602 |
Normally, yes, but not under Trump, they waived that requirement. |
Data from academic and human rights organizations show that asylum seekers in the US have a high court appearance rate, with studies indicating that well over 80% of asylum seekers attend their hearings . Compliance rates are significantly higher for those with legal representation, often exceeding 95%. Official government numbers sometimes inflate "no-show" figures because of flawed reporting methods, such as counting only completed cases rather than all pending hearings. Overall attendance rate Over 80%: A multi-year study by the American Immigration Council found that 83% of non-detained immigrants with pending or completed removal cases appeared for all of their court hearings between fiscal years 2008 and 2018. Over 90% for asylum applicants: Another analysis by the American Immigration Council found that from 2001 to 2016, 92% of asylum-seeking families released from detention had attended all their required court hearings. Impact of legal representation Legal counsel is the most significant factor affecting compliance rates. 96% to 98% with legal counsel: Multiple analyses of government data reveal that non-detained immigrants with legal representation have court appearance rates of 96% or higher. For families and unaccompanied children with lawyers, compliance rates are nearly 98%. . |
Jackpot! Come one and all, just say the magic words! |
“Cite” your source, which would also cite the data used and methodology applied. Common sense stats 101 |

But then why would I vote for an immigration single issue bill, even one most voters want, if I don’t get some other goodies in return?
I’m a politician! |
The first too should happen offshore. Period. |
And contribute payroll taxes, social security, unemployment, medicare/medicaid that are never collected as well as sales taxes, real estate taxes (through rent) and spend money that contributes to the GDP. |
Again, ANTIFA is not an organization. ANTIFA is an idea, that many different people and different groups support, including, at one time, the American military. |
It was a GOP Senate bill that the Dem House and Dem White House agreed to support...until Trump tanked it. |
This thread is about someone shooting ICE detainees. Let's not get into a debate with these mouthbreathers about immigration, as though there's any justification for this. Only days ago, they were telling us all how despicable it is to celebrate death and to make excuses for political violence. Now they want to debate immigration policy instead of talking about the actual crime. Don't take the bait. |

Maybe your common sense needs an adjustment? |
The more "fair" you try to make things through carve-outs, the more unfair things become. The country is suffering from complexity collapse and the unintended consequences of these bills. |
ANTIFA - AntiFascist So if you are opposed to ANTIFA then...(fill in the blank) |
I guess MAGA has been trying to tell us this whole time. They were always anti antifa. They love their orange fascist. |
