It doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without consequences from your employer or the public.

In the most basic terms, freedom of speech means that private citizens can criticize the government without interference by or retaliation from the government. That's the only way in which your speech is protected.

It doesn't mean you can post your opinion on X on Saturday and are protected from getting fired or suspended at work on Monday.

Now, where it gets murky with reporters is the freedom of the press aspect. Did he say that as a reporter in the capacity of doing his job? No. He said it as a private citizen who happens to be employed by ABC News. Had he said it as a reporter while doing a story and the white house demanded his firing/suspension, that would be against his first amendment rights to free speech and freedom of the press.

Got it. MAGA and Fox can say whatever they want and everyone has to agree with it. Everyone else does not have freedom of speech.

Are you in middle school??

No.....apparently the only ones allowed to berate and insult presidents is FOX...but let's be real they are not actually journalists and when trump refuses to leave FOX will be dancing in the streets drunk as usual celebrating their king.

This thread is about ABC and Terry Moran’s unhinged post.
Please try to stay on topic.

Anything to deflect from the truth....where is your outrage when FOX phony journalists insult presidents they don't like. Oh right MAGA is nothing without their hypocrisy.

You must watch Fox often. Why? Are you a secret MAGA?

They're getting tired of being sued for libel.

They've never actually had to pay, though, because it's extremely difficult to prove libel.

What are you talking about? They are paying Trump $15 million.

That's ABC News, though, not The View.

Also, defamation is different from libel, but in the same universe.

Stephen Miller is hateful. That is a fact.

Correct. In the panoply of MAGA hateful haters, he is the most hateful.

Ok, then.

Moran did call Stephen Miller hateful. He is allowed to post whatever he wants. And as a representative of ABC news, he will deal with the consequences.
Don’t forget “journalists” are supposed to be neutral. They are now taking off their masks for all to see.

So the fox network is held to a different standard than the abc network?

Fox is not a news network. Fox is a Republican propaganda outlet.

ABC News is a legitimate news organization and cannot allow its journalists to demonstrate bias. Journalists sacrifice their right to opinion on exchange for being credible providers of facts.

Too late, he should be fired. Damage done.

Agree trump should be fired....so much damage.

Too bad the 2024 election determined the opposite of your point of view, and put him back in office.

By a plurality, not a majority, and Trump's numbers have only gone down, since.

We don’t elect presidents by majority. He is your president. And he is at a healthy 50 percent approval rating today.

50% approval?? Says who? Fox “News”?
The same Fox News that is now registered as “Infotainment” after the latest set of lawsuits against Fox News for stating outright false information?

The Hill.
You should keep up with the news

He isn’t wrong.

Hope you don't work in a school system. There are a lot of truthful ways to say things and describe students, but professionals know would be inappropriate.

This is a really stupid comment...I'm sure you know that though.

Not at all. In any business or profession, you have to consider your choice of words. You can't just bluntly say what YOU think to be "the truth."

+1
And hasn’t it been Democrats braying that people are free to say whatever they want - but we’re also free to react to their speech. In this case, there were repercussions. FAFO, as they always say.

And what kind of “journalist” would make such blatantly biased comments in the first place? What a moron.

Do you say the same thing about those that work for Fox News? The NY post?

Has a journalist from either of those two places ever put their extremely biased opinion on social media? Please do provide citations.

As a journalist and reporter one is expected to deliver the truth. Sometimes there are no two sides to the story. This is what got us here, living in the ignorance and hate of the Trump era. Journalists should feel free to report on the truth, so they don’t have to take into account every stupid viewpoint and treat it as equal to the truth. That’s how we ended up with Fox.

Duuur, vaccines got the autizmz?!?11

That’s stupid, and should be ignored. Miller is a hateful man. That’s also the truth. Should the reporter have gone about it in a slightly different way? Maybe, but he knew what he was doing when he did it.

There is no issue with suspending a journalist who decides to put his/her personal opinions on blast. Sorry, FAFO, amirite?

DP. You clearly don't "got it." That's not at all what the PP was saying, and you know it. No one has to agree with your speech, though you certainly have the right to it.

Where did I say that MAGA and Fox can say whatever they want and we have to agree? It's not my fault that Fox news hosts spout off lies and face no repercussions by the network. Take that up with Fox.

I'm simply telling you that the OFFICIAL meaning of freedom of speech is that you can say what you want about the government without RETALIATION or PUNISHMENT by the government. That's it. That is your only protection. The Government didn't punish Terry Moran, ABC News did.

Terry Moran should have had a disclaimer on his Twitter account that views expressed by him are his own opinions and do not reflect the opinions of his employer. But even that isn't going to 100% protect you from retaliation at work for something you say in public.

I've never had a job where I didn't have to sign some kind of morality clause that stated that anything I did or said in my private life that could reflect negatively on the company or its employees would be immediate grounds for demotion, suspension, or dismissal.

Exactly. Of course employers are allowed to take action when an employee makes them look bad by spouting their opinions in public. That's their prerogative. Pretty sure the nitwits on this thread know that - they just don't like it when one of their own is called out.

and yet we have an administration who says inappropriate and unprofessional comments about everyone all day every day....get off your pretentious high horse.

Trump was just re elected.

Moran on the other hand, is suspended.

So think about whether people are agreeing with you.

So you admit that MAGA are hypocrites. Got it.

The nitwits here are anyone who supports the current administration and caves to their scare tactics. Speaking out against them is actually a moral imperative.

Why don’t you post a statement they have made that is equivalent to what Terry Moran posted? Then we can talk.

Facts? If you think the post above represents “facts” then you need to return to 3rd grade for a lesson on fact and opinion
