It's shocking how many people spout off "first amendment!!!! freedom of speech!!!!" who don't actually know what that means. It doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without consequences from your employer or the public. In the most basic terms, freedom of speech means that private citizens can criticize the government without interference by or retaliation from the government. That's the only way in which your speech is protected. It doesn't mean you can post your opinion on X on Saturday and are protected from getting fired or suspended at work on Monday. Now, where it gets murky with reporters is the freedom of the press aspect. Did he say that as a reporter in the capacity of doing his job? No. He said it as a private citizen who happens to be employed by ABC News. Had he said it as a reporter while doing a story and the white house demanded his firing/suspension, that would be against his first amendment rights to free speech and freedom of the press.
Got it. MAGA and Fox can say whatever they want and everyone has to agree with it. Everyone else does not have freedom of speech.
Where did I say that MAGA and Fox can say whatever they want and we have to agree? It's not my fault that Fox news hosts spout off lies and face no repercussions by the network. Take that up with Fox. I'm simply telling you that the OFFICIAL meaning of freedom of speech is that you can say what you want about the government without RETALIATION or PUNISHMENT by the government. That's it. That is your only protection. The Government didn't punish Terry Moran, ABC News did. Terry Moran should have had a disclaimer on his Twitter account that views expressed by him are his own opinions and do not reflect the opinions of his employer. But even that isn't going to 100% protect you from retaliation at work for something you say in public. I've never had a job where I didn't have to sign some kind of morality clause that stated that anything I did or said in my private life that could reflect negatively on the company or its employees would be immediate grounds for demotion, suspension, or dismissal.
Exactly. Of course employers are allowed to take action when an employee makes them look bad by spouting their opinions in public. That's their prerogative. Pretty sure the nitwits on this thread know that - they just don't like it when one of their own is called out.
The nitwits here are anyone who supports the current administration and caves to their scare tactics. Speaking out against them is actually a moral imperative.
