Are diamonds just done?

(PP doesn’t know what “stigma” means. Didn’t we just have a thread on this exact topic? )

Here’s what WILL be stigmatized going forward- big ass emeralds. The Taliban is overseeing the reopening of gemstone and other mineral mines, and apparently some of the most exquisite emeralds on the planet are found underneath Afghanistan.

Pp you are referring to. “Real” diamonds never had a stigma in my social circle and people I knew called lab diamonds “fake.” I would venture to say diamond marketing is still pretty powerful.

And your post was unnecessarily rude.

This. No one in my social circle assumes that your diamond is a lab. If that's what you want, fine, but I would not buy one. Natural diamonds are the status symbol now.

Status symbols, by definition, need to be easily identifiable out in the wild. Natural diamonds v lab diamonds are not. At all.

Well the enormous like 6 carat stones that would run around $100k are generally going to be labs so most of us can tell.

Don't you worry, judgmental pp who "can tell." A 6 carat lab is still very expensive, so there won't be a lot of the poors running around with them to annoy your sense of what is right. When the price on the really big labs comes down, maybe you can lobby your local community for some sumptuary laws? Just to make sure everyone's place in the world is clear?

The women I know with diamonds that large can most definitely afford them. I don't see regular women walking around with diamonds that big.

You can already get one for around $1500. How much cheaper can they get? Clearly you have no idea wtf you’re talking about. And IDGAF about place in the world, they just look stupid and uncomfortable. Nobody cares.

$1400 for a 6 carat now. Not expensive at all in terms of engagement rings.

I just ordered a 2.4 carat lab diamond. It was so cheap! My engagement ring (mined diamond) is about 2 carats, so I don’t think anyone will know, nor do I care if they do.

Good for you they’re so pretty. It’s the people who are all I would only do lab for ethical reasons but then are all butt hurt that people assume their enormous stones are labs that are too dumb for words.

Clearly someone should do something. We can't have the poors getting access to things that used to signal our status. My DH paid over 100k for my 5 carat ring. This is completely unfair.

I don’t think anyone thinks diamonds signal any kind of status anymore, other than you don’t use your hands much if you have a huge one.

Yes they are done. Lab and mined.

I think so too but it will take a while. Bridal trends are usually like 10 years behind. I don’t think the labs will be profitable at all soon and likely will just go to Claire’s or costume jewelry. What is the point of cutting a stone to make a few hundred? The margins are off. Also, mined are out.
