And FFS, I NEVER said they didn't break the law. I said that drinking at college before 21 is the ONLY time they have broken the law. And yes, they broke a law where them doing that has literally NO impact on anyone else. Versus Drunk Driving which can KILL someone! So yes, there is a HUGE difference |
Or this .. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/22/us/riley-strain-found-nashville-missing/index.html |
You're acting like this is some sort of gotcha when it's exactly what the PP has already said. |
Because she is a hypocrite because she doesn't think that underage drinking is a problem and it's really bot big deal because that's the only time they broke the law. Underage drinking is against the law. Period. It absolutely can be dangerous and it contributes to ten deaths. Acting like a saint and judging OP when her kid also breaks the law is the epitome of hypocrisy. |
First rule of going out (whether you are drinking or not), you stay with friends, you do not let a friend leave alone. |
Exactly.. |
Drunk driving, even involving teens, is almost never just a single instance thing. |
| I'm stunned by the number of boys my kids know who have had either reckless driving convictions or dui convictions. Every single one of the boys I know with dui convictions was drinking alcohol by their sophomore year in hs and their parents knew and did not care. These are not low ses parents. Too many parents look away and consider hs drinking a rite of passage. It's utterly stupid that people still think this way. |
I know someone who needs to look up the word "hypocrisy" |
You know at 19 she could drink 1/2 glass of wine and get a dui. |
Well yes, everyone knows that, or should. If you are under 21, you know that any level of BAC over ZERO is eligible for a DUI and to loose your license. So smart kids under 21 do not drive if they have had anything to drink, even if it was 1 hour ago and only 1 beer. So while you or I may have 1 drink with a 2 hour dinner and know we are good to drive (BAC is likely less than 0.01 by the time we get in a car, especially if the one drink was with food), someone under 21 knows that will get them arrested/DL suspended. So don't do it. Similar to in our state it is illegal for the first 6 months with your DL to have anyone who is not immediate family under the age of 21 in your vehicle with you while driving. If you are pulled for ANYTHING and have a friend under 21 with you it impacts both the driver and the passenger(s). First time is a warning (unless it's an accident, then it can mean suspension immediately). 2nd offense is suspension for both driver and passenger(s) under 21. No questions asked. No lawyer will get you out of it either (based on FB/NextDoor in my area, as many have tried). Our kids followed the rules, so did all of their friends. However, they know people at their HS who did not and lost their DL for 6 months. So if you do stupid things, you win stupid prizes. |
An 19 yo having a few beers or cocktails does not impact you or anyone else. Underage drinking (or any drinking) is not a problem unless you are a public nusance. A 19yo having two beers in their dorm or college apartment or at a college party is not dangerous. Unless they drink and then drive, then you are a danger to others as well as yourself. |

I’m not a lawyer and late to the conversation, but most states (all maybe?) including DC have an implied consent law which states that by having a drivers license, you are consenting to a chemical test like a breathalyzer. There may be legal consequences for declining to take it. But beside that, absolutely. Give them your license, registration & insurance. Follow their orders and keep your mouth shut. And above all DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. |
+1 such a weird response |
